You are correct. Baseball was my first love as a sports fan, but they just can't get out of their own way. The competitive balance is a big issue, because so many teams cry poverty and others don't care and spend what they have to in the name of winning.
I agree with this. The competitive balance in baseball, as well as college football for that matter, makes it a joke. Go tell a Cincinnati Reds or Maryland football fan that his team has a chance to win a national championship and they will laugh at you. But in the NFL there is always hope as we've seen with the Bengals, Lions and now Commanders.

I don't think there is a better sport to watch in the US than pro football. It's a game you can follow live or in person, it's not over saturated with too many games and the way it's set up with revenue sharing and the salary cap just makes it more competitive from top to bottom, and better to watch and be a fan.

Spot on......

I love the NFL:
I love the hard hitting, the excitement of a big play downfield when the qb drops back to pass.....
The two minute warning......down by a td,and your team is either trying to stop the opponent or trying for the win,is better than anything any other sport has.....
The SB is like no other,1 game and one game only.......love getting in the SB pools......makes watching the game more fun to watch when your team is not in it.....
The NFL draft.....the other 3 major doesnt even compare....boring.

MLB.....ya,season is waaaay too long.
I used to love watching it in my younger days, but damn is it boring.....
Going to a game was a blast, but could care less anymore....
And watching the Cubs finally win a WS,it seemed like they went back into that 100 year + hibernatiion.......
I have not watched more than one inning since 2017 of ANY game.

NBA......80s and were great.....Celtics/Lakers rivalry......MJ coming into the league in the 80s were fun times......after MJ retired, the NBA just seemed boring af....LeBron,gtfo here.

NHL.....never understood, dont wanna watch a guys going back n forth trying to stick a puck in the net.....
Had a coulle buddies talk Blackhawks when they were on that tear a few years ago and I decided to watch game 7 of their first Stanley Cuo win,it went into o.t. and I turned the game off before the Hawks won it....didnt care.....boring.

Soccer, golf ,college foitbaland whatever else their is too watch.....no thanks

I played football and baseball through high school.
Came home from 'Nam and started coaching baseball in 1974. Started coaching football in the fall of 1975. Became a baseball umpire and continued coaching and officiating baseball and softball until 2011. The rules for pitchers began to change and the limits on pitching innings screwed the game from Little League to MLB. I quit.

In 1975 I was an Ass;t. Line coach and moved up to HC. I officiated from 1980 until 2015. Never got to wear a white hat. I loved working with kids and young men. They all had a pure devotion to a goal, whether it ws to win a game or get a college scholarship.

I coached and officiated basketball, both girls and boys until 2017. I couldn't keep up with the speed of the game. I started making calls from behind a play and decided that I wasn't doing anyone any favors making a foul call from thirty feet behind the players. I quit.

Football constantly forces a player to improve because his opponents are always improving.
Basketball has no rules. No one dribbles the ball correctly and the game allows as many as three steps to a basket. Street shit.
Baseball screwed itself worrying about pitchers' arms and limiting pitching with youth. Then changing mound height and distance.
Hockey skates were a horror for me. I couldn't stay up on the blades and they always collapsed inwards. I liked figure skates and was pretty good at knocking down girls and helping them stand up by wrapping my hands under their armpits and their chest.

I think only playing 17 games makes an NFL game just so much more valuable therefore more interesting. But I just love to watch football over every other game and it's not really close.

I understand they play defense in the NBA and the athletes are the best in the world. But with the wide open style of today it looks more like an All Star game than a real game with intense defense a lot of the time. The lane is wide open and players just need to shake their defender to have an open path to the rim, that was never the case in the past so it looks like they aren't playing defense today to me.

Had a great rookie campaing, now going through a sophomore slump. He's seems to be getting better and Blackhawks look to have another too five pick in draft which should help going forward. Hoping they get number one again next year to get Bedard's cousin, Gavin McKenna, who some say is even better than he is.

Well sure throwing a few extra pitches holds value to the opponent, I guess. You really want to compare that with your opponent startng 50 yards further from the goal line? So a 50 yard completion clearly holds much more value than a 2 out double with the runner stranded.

Of course preferring the way the NBA was played in the past is my opinion, sorry if I implied otherwise.

As for being get off my lawn guy, guilty as charged. Except you can buy weed legally now so there's that.
Hey not like you are alone in preferring the lesser athletes from earlier days over the better, more skilled athletes.

as to the 50 yard pass it was your way of saying every play has meaning (even if no score results). But isn't the same still true of MLB? I mean, the success rate depending on the count can fluctuate greatly...obviously men on base can change things as well.

Please don't get me wrong as I prefer football far more than baseball....but no need to go overboard.

Seems like you are old enough to remember...but must have forgotten defense was almost a rumor in the 80s. with lesser players.

I don't want to derail the thread with this sidebar. But I stand on the position that a 50 yard gain in field position is infinitely more valuable than a pitcher being force to throw a few additional high leverage pitches. again under the scenario that the runner is stranded on 2nd base.

Again I understand the athletes are better today. I still believe the game of the 80's with the amazing passing and cutting to the hoop was more fun to watch than 30 threes jacked up. The defense was poor but this was not the 50's with the lack of athleticism, I'll put Dominique Wilkins, Clyde Drexler or Dr J's athletic ability up there with anyone today.

I can agree a 50 yard gain on one play can be of greater value...but how many 50 yard plays are there in a game and how many of them happen with no points being scored on the drive?

wont disagree with your comments as it's what you prefer.....but they went to more 3s and closer shots as they are far more efficient. I'd guess each team now has a player or more than 1 more athletic than the guys you mentioned. also more skilled. and I liked watching all 3 of those guys.

I was not the poster to present the scenario of a 50 yard completion that does not lead to a score. That was your scenario as you argued it held no value in post #49. I was simply responding to your hypothetical situation.

Now it appears as if you are totally changing your argument from your previouis post and agree with me that a 50 yard completion holds great value in field position.

you are correct in that first comment and it was me who first mentioned the 50 yarder. Unlike most here I'll simply own my mistake. My bad.

and, no, I'm not agreeing with you that a 50 yard completion holds great value if it does not become a score. some value? sure. I will also add a 50 yarder that does not become a score likely does not happen much in a game as I pointed out.

You clearly go out of your way to overvalue football and really no need. You like it better, maybe a lot better. so do I. No need to overvalue certain things about it.

Gimee a warm, sunny day at Fenway Park, sitting at field level, with guys walking around with beers and hot dogs. Who cares what the game is? I'd sit there all afternoon and watch pre-schoolers play cornhole. For some sports, it's just the atmosphere that gets you. Down close to the ice, there's nothing like a good college hockey game. For a living room sport, it's the NFL because that's the best couch potato experience.

I love football but would gladly trade one of the Packers SB wins for a Brewers WS ring.

Yes, but when is the last time the Bengals, Lions or Commanders won anything? Before every season, you probably could have list 4-5 teams that have a chance to win the Super Bowl and you would almost always be right. It’s probably not much different in any of the major sports actually.

Well, the Redskins had all those years under Snyder when they weren't going anywhere.

But think of all the teams that perennially suck in the NFL. There are too many of them. I will die, maybe before the woeful Patriots make the playoffs again. There are too many teams that just give up before the season is half over, and their fans give up, too.

Patriots will be good again. Give it 3-4 years to get the rebuild done. They’ll be back. Hang around at least until then, ok?

NBA , superstars call all the shots and the drama that surrounds most of them in todays game is why ratings are in tiolet

NFL, who ever got the best QB gets all the calls and wins it all
