The Dolphins had bad defenses most of Marino’s career.

From 86-91, Marino’s prime years, they were last or 2nd to last defensively except for 1990 (top 10).

They didn’t have a defense ranked in the single digits until his 2nd to last year when he was well past his prime.

Add to the fact he only had (2) 1000 yard rushers his entire career, and it’s easy to see why he never won the big game.

Everyone knows the playoffs is a whole different season from regular season. Having a defense and a running game matters more, especially back then when the rules weren’t catered to the offense like it is today.

Every team the Dolphins played knew they were going to win or lose on Marino’s arm because they had no run game and no defense.

Marino was never allowed to be a game manager ( ala Brady his first 2 SB’s, Trent Dilfer, and more ). It was one him every game to win or lose.

The fact they won as much as they did and actually made the playoffs with no running game and bad defenses speak to how great he actually was. Most teams would’ve never made the playoffs to begin with.

So why didn't he win at Pitt where he had what Bobby Bowden called the greatest college football team he ever saw?

If Elo means anything, 84 and 85 were his only championship level teams. I do think you can argue that he should have gotten to the SB in 85 but he still should've lost to the Bears if that happened. According to Profootballreference, they think the 84 Niners is the 4th best team in the history of football and the 85 Bears is the 2nd best team in the history of football.

I see no issue with Marino's legacy. Unless you think he is the GOAT but I rarely see that anymore.
As a Patriot fan, I remember thinking, "at least we can beat Marino!"

Appparently. I had no recollection of that for some reason.

Me either. I knew he had a shitty game against the 9ers in the SB, but that was a lotta bad QBing by Marino in the playoffs.

And that article pretty much kicked every excuse Marino fanboys have. Just brutal.
