There's no way he was promised the job. If he comes in and isn't ready, there's no way Day is trotting him out there, regardless of if Martell was "his guy" or not. He has worked under Day for two seasons now and it's not like he was some no-name 3*. He was a top 75 overall recruit for a reason.

He went to OSU because of Day. He turned JT Barrett's college career around and had Haskins in NYC, probably winning the Heisman almost any other year. Field's NCAA waiver hasn't even been granted for immediate eligibility.

In two years, Ryan Day turned JT Barrett into a QB that was somehow able to stick on an NFL roster for almost a full year and has Haskins set to be a top 10 pick. I think he made the right choice.
