I’d rather not let a primere CB like him hit the ope market next year with the cap high. He’s a top 3 CB imo. Very reliable in coverage, tackles well, physical and has the beat footwork of any CB in the NFL. Pay him now before he hits the open market. 4 year contract would be perfect to me.

That brings up the question - do the Broncos shoot to pay Harris at the top scale for a DB for the Bronco's team (i.e. better than Kareem Jackson's contract), or do they have to pay him top dollar in the league?

Do you think they could just add a couple of highly paid years to his current contract? Leave this year alone as the cap is tight. Sign him to an "extension" that is really just two more (highly paid) years with no bonus.

Elway gave Champ a 4 year contract in Feb of 2011 .. Champ would be 33 by the start of that season, and at that time, was playing good football ..

Champ played the 2011 and 2012 seasons and the 5 games plus a disaster of a SB in 2013 ..

I remember the infamous Ravens/Flacco playoff game in Jan 2013, and Champ was burned by Torrey Smith a few times .. by that point in his career, he had fallen off a lot, and subsequent the foot injury was the last straw ..

( and for one play, Rahim Moore has been unfairly blamed as the goat in that game )

I think Aqib Talib deserves to be mentioned in the same category as Champ as far as all-time great Bronco CBs, but Talib's abilities seems to have taken a big hit recently too ... In watching a few of the Rams' games over the past season, he looked as if he'd taken a step back ..

Harris will be 30 in June

Harris did not play in the 2013 SB because of a torn ACL .. He broke his fibula last December ..

What I see as a positive for Harris is the we took no CBs in the draft -- I think that says something ( more than just faith in Yiadom ) ... but I just don;t see Elway giving Harris a 4 year deal, unless there are outs like in Flacco's contract ..

Not sayin' he doesn't deserve a 3 or 4 year deal -- I'd be happy if he got that ... but there has to be some sort of protection for the team as a drop off in play is, unfortunately, imminent with Harris

Champ would have been fine had it not been for his lisfranic foot injury. He was never the same after that.

Obviously Denver would have to set Harris contract up in a smart manner for their own sake.

Does the CBA play into this negotiation?

I would love to sign Chris to a 4 or 5 year deal if we can fit him in the cap given Miller is on the horizon too.

Not sure Harris has 4-5 productive years. I’m not sure that would be a good deal for the Broncos.

Sounds more and more like we will give him a pay raise this year and he will become a free agent after the season (and probably leave) :(

I guess at least we can use the tag on him next year getting something in return for him.

LOL - if the Broncos are starting Lock next year and Harris is healthy - he will get signed with the left over QB money.

Would’ve been smarter to lock him up for the next three years IMO. 15 million will be cheap next year for a pro bowl cb

This is probably smart by Elway tough. Give Chris a year to play under Fangio who players seem to love to play for and allows him to see where we are at the QB position. If we cut Flacco at years end we now have more cap freedom and if Chris loves playing for Fangio he may be more willing to return at a little less then market value.

Reports are we are inching closer to a deal with Harris. No details yet on what the agreement would be.

Locally they are saying it's a bump in pay for 2019 but no extension was ever offered so Elway and Fangio not interested past 2019. My thought is they may want to see how 2019 plays out with Flacco. If they go with Lock in 2020 do they want to tie themselves to an older CB making top money who gets to watch a QB develop.

I’m hoping that a younger CB will step up and be ready to take on the mantle so that there isn’t a dire need to pay Harris top dollar.

Even with a pay increase it is good for us. Build a relationship with Fangio, can franchise tag him and either re-sign or get better compensation in return then what we would currently get.

I think this is the best thing to do ... As of right now, Harris is 29 ( he'll be 30 next month ) ... so by the time the 2020 season begins, he will be 31, and even if he has a great 2019, 31 is not exactly a bargaining chip in his favor if he were to hit the open market after this upcoming season ..

My guess is that he will be very pleased playing under Fangio, and that if he has a good 2019, both he and the Broncos would be motivated to work out an agreement that would have him retire a Bronco ..

I would suck to see Harris in another uniform, but I think there is so much incentive in our corner ( get it ? ) ... Not every potential suitor will be able to offer him a situation like we have with arguably the best defensive mind in the game and Harris' familiarity with everything Bronco ..

Harris doesn't seem to have the type on mindset to up his game in a contract year, but it can't hurt as far as him playing lights out in 2019

The Broncos are going to shock a lot of people who don't appreciate the strides we've made and the things that we have going for us

The Broncos have zero commitment to Joe Flacco after this season. If Flacco - gets injured - doesn't have a great season - and basically has any result other than taking the Broncos to the playoffs - then I think you move Lock and Rypien up to 1 and 2 - and you have plenty of money to negotiate with Chris Harris about.

Usually I would agree with you guys, but here’s my take. Harris signed as a UDFA, then he chose loyalty over money and still played at the highest level. It’s time we show a little loyalty back, and give him the financial security to finish his career as a Bronco. I get the business aspect of it, but Harris as a player and a person of exemplary character transcends the financial lines of value.
