Colin Kaepernick - QB - 49ers

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh hinted the team will use more three wide sets in 2014.

It is doubtful San Francisco drops their run-first approach, but these comments coupled with the 49ers pursuit of several wide receivers this offseason point to a more open offense in 2014. That would be big fantasy news for Colin Kaepernick, who managed to finish as the tenth best fantasy quarterback despite throwing the ball only 416 times in 2013. With a more open offense and a healthy receiving corps, Kaepernick could make a serious run at the top-5 next season.

nope never said that. Said we fixed wasting our time outs. Using them all before the 2nd Q started.

You never said anything about the second quarter. And it was impossibly wrong. Made more entertaining because you then denied having used the exact language from about four posts earlier.

I'd follow that video up with a montage of Colin Kaepernick's delay-of-game penalties, but nobody has put that 20-minute video together yet.

Delay of game is one thing… But running straight into the backside of your own player is another… lol OH Man …

But that stems more from our offense in general and not necessarily the QB.

Delay of game is ALWAYS on the QB. You do what you have to in order to get the play in on time. Call a play yourself if you have to. At least, for the love of crap, call a time out if you have 3 of 'em.

The "it's the offense" excuse is nonsense. I've never seen anything like this in either the NFL or college. Andrew Luck never had delay-of-game issues in Harbaugh's offense.

Right. Delay of game when you have 3 time outs is 10 times worse.

It's kind of like running out of bounds for a loss. Completely inexcusable (guess who did that in the Super Bowl by the way; if you said "someone with football intelligence greater than a golf bag," you would be wrong).

Your beef is only when delay of games are taken while there are still 3 TOs? That's fair, but can you tell us how times that's actually happened?

So does that mean when Harbaugh/Mangini are wasting TOs them on futile challenges and then there are less than 3 TOs left, the QB is excused from not wanting to waste another? Harbaugh has said he doesn't mind getting a 5 yard penalty over wasting a TO. I bet you are going to say that is just another example of Harbaugh protecting Kap. But it is a philosophy that was there before Kap.

Jikkle was trying to show that the delay of game penalties have been there since 2011. The common denominator has been the coaching, not the personnel. Alex Smith had 10 delay of game penalties in 2011. Kap had 13 in 2013. Alex Smith had 6 for the Chiefs (under a different coaching regime). Did Alex randomly become better at getting plays off or maybe Reid's offense is a tad simpler? Shouldn't this information mean something at least? Harbaugh's philosophy/offense has to take some of the blame.

The Reid system isn't simpler per se, it's just that Reid calls the plays, not Petersen (O.C.). Roman relays the plays to Harbaugh and then to the QB. An extra however-long-it-takes-to-read-the-playcall at the minimum, not counting the time for Harbaugh to veto and call his own play and Kaepernick to choose. If taking this EXACT structure, I don't think any grouping can remain complex in its calls without getting delay of games. Even Manning. Note: I said exact system, not the QB calling plays. Also, one could simplify it and not get delays (not optimal), but this exact system is flawed (though it worked every time we didn't get a delay or unnecessary timeout).

Not on 3rd down. And Harbaugh isn't "wasting" time outs on challenges; he's attempting to get a call overturned. Doing something like running out of bounds for a loss is WASTING yardage. This has nothing to do with the fact that Kaepernick has no idea what's going on because his mental aptitude is embarrassingly low.

It happen 1 time. Need to get over it. That 1 play didn't cost us the game. If a 5 yard penalty did then we don't deserve to win the game. Kaepernick scored a 38 on his wonderlic so please stop with he isn't smart enough. The Avg player scores 20-21.

Yes thank you u made my argument. Never mention delay of game. Thanks for the help. A beer for you. :suds:

And you never mentioned the second quarter. The GB game was probably the worst all season in terms of blown TOs. And we wasted one in the Carolina game as well. The only playoff game we didn't waste a TO was the Seattle game in which we had a devastating delay of game penalty. So saying it was fixed in the playoffs is laughable. Though not as much as your subsequent denial. Close call, though.

Yes it did cost team team the game, and it was an issue the entire season. And not only were there 13 delay of game penalties, but there were numerous time outs blown because DumbDumb is mentally slow & couldn't get the team lined up in time.

Great QBs are great because they can see the field & make a decision & release the ball QUICKLY. Kaepernick is slow at all 3 of those things.

I don't agree on calling a timeout in the second half ever unless it's inside 5 minutes, but if the play isn't coming in, call your own and run it.

No, it happened in almost every game this year. It happened in the super bowl last year. I'm not willing to place as much of the blame on Kap as Sick is - it's an ongoing problem that the coaching staff needs to fix - but it is ultimately Kap's responsibility to get the play off on time.

Sometimes the coaching staff's do take to long to get play calling in though… It's so vital so save time-outs especially in the second half, so maybe he was trying to save time-outs and thought he could get the play off…. Happens sometimes…
