And Chapman, a half season rental, got Gleyber Torres, plus Billy McKenney (who was a top-ish prospect at the time) and Adam Warren
I have actually heard that this trade has scared most the gems away from spending big on rental relievers.

Not sure I fully understand why, though. The Cubs won a championship after that trade. Isn’t giving up a future HOFer (“worst case”) worth breaking the curse?

I agree, but mainly because I hope two or three teams break the bank on picking up some superb relievers from the Giants.

The last two days on the right panel on CBS sports they have a small headline (on the MLB home page) where it says the Yankees are split on MadBum to me that seems like propaganda feed to them (the source and publisher) to try to pressure the Giants to expect a low return. I hope the Giants hold out for a great return.

I feel pretty confident that there will be a nice return for him. But, if not, they can always keep him for the compensatory pick.

Not a trade rumor but not worth its own thread:

I suppose Will Smith is going to be our only All Star rep. What if he gets traded before the ASG?

I get the feeling that, unless some team blows FZ away with a great value package, he'll be around until close to the end of July. If he gets shipped off before the ASB, and the return is underwhelming, I'll have many questions and will feel not nice feelings.

The prospect mentioned in the piece is Mauricio Dubon, a SS/2B. Makes sense as the Giants are pretty thin at that position. Not a huge fan of his, not a great defender, power is probably a factor of the league he's playing in, marginal speed. He'd have to really it.

That being said, would be a nice compliment to Panik and Crawford.

Oddly, I think this hot streak puts the team in a better position at the deadline. If they were 10/12 back it would be pretty obvious that the Giants would be looking to sell Smith and Bum at all costs. Now though? They can tell teams to back off if they try to low-ball them and ride it out.

Jim Bowden today:

If the Giants do trade any of their four best trade assets — which at this point are probably Madison Bumgarner, Will Smith, Tony Watson and Sam Dyson — they’ll do so only because the return was so significant, and their future so much brighter, that they felt they had to make the deals. In other words, don’t expect the Giants to just be sellers.

FWIW, Jeff Passan yesterday:

“San Francisco’s recent success isn’t throwing a wrench in the team’s trade-Bumgarner-and-all-the-relievers plan,” Passan wrote Wednesday morning. “Even with their best run of the year, the Giants are three games below .500 and have the third-worst run differential in the NL. They are selling. One more time, a bit slower. They. Are. Selling.”

The players are being awfully rude to fz. Fz is in an absolute no-win situation now because of this streak.

While I still believe a “tear down” is the right move, I am not sure it is possible to do that now. No way can fz sell that to the casual fan. I am not certain he can sell that to the owners either.

The writer is basing his argument here on stats from the whole season, which don't mean Jack Schitt.

I don't think he's making an argument. He's reporting what he's hearing from the team.

Read what you quoted. Does that sound like someone in the FO?

I don't think it's a "no win" but it's definitely tough. The casual fans will be mad no matter what, unless they're winning. Even if the Giants continued to be shitty, the casual fan would be mad because they traded Bumgarner, perhaps one of the few things keeping them interested. Or they'd be mad that Zaidi didn't any anyone 'noteworthy'

In terms of value, though, I think FZ is in a decent position. If they aren't getting good offers, FZ can let it ride with the team. There's no way he would have been able to let it ride if they were still 14 games under .500
