Heard on the radio, Jon Morosi tweeted that we're talking to the Dodgers about dealing them Will Smith. I heartily approve, FZ is going to know their prospects intimately and we are in no position to be picky about who we deal with

I hate to assist them in breaking the curse of Gibson, but if they make them hurt...

If the trade goes down, then Will Smith bull pen music needs to be “Just the Two of Us” if Will Smith is catching.

Or maybe "Men In (Dodger) Blue"?

They should have a Will Smith night and have the actor throw out the first pitch and free admission to anyone named Will Smith.

I think this could also be a bargaining chip for FZ. Memo to the other teams trying to acquire bullpen help: The Giants are willing to trade with their arch-rivals who happen to be leading all of baseball in wins. Get on it.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind having Gavin Lux even if it meant having to trade with the dogs.

I wonder if Smith, Watson, Dyson, etc. can get another team to pick up the salaries of Melancon, Longo, Poopturdjia?

Also: how important is salary relief with Bum coming off anyway?

For 2020, we are at $125M with 8 players under contract:
Buster
JC
Poopturdjia
Belt
Craw
Longo
Melancon
Watson
5 guys are arb eligible (with my estimate)
Dyson (7)
Panik (5)
Kratz (2)
Blach (1)
Slater (1)
Another 18 players are ML minimum
Gott
Moronta
DRod
Duggar
Bergen
Adon
Avalino
Beede
Black
Coonrod
Garcia
Jerez
Jones
Shaw
Suarez
Valera
Venditte
Webb

9 open spots, assuming all stay on the 40 (which they won't). So maybe clearing salary isn't so important?

I agree that salary dumping shouldn't be a huge deal. As you mention, they're not getting close to the tax line, and this team is unlikely to compete for a couple years. I think, if anything, they should be willing to take on some salary, or eat most of it, if it means getting a prospect in return.

For example, if they find a sucker to take on Shark, I'd hope that they'd be okay paying the majority of his contract if it means they get a solid B+ prospect or something. I would be very much against it if they traded a prospect or valuable trade chip to get out of a contract.

Might want to update your list - both Kratz and Valera are no longer with the org. And Venditte is off the 40 man (so is Webb, but will probably be added back once his suspension is finished). Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones dfa'd before the offseason. He got one AB with Sac, placed on the IL, got activated early this month and sent to San Jose, where he played in 1 game and went on their IL.

Lets hope the Giants don’t fuck this opportunity up. They have a chance to get some high return on a few guys.

Well, let's be real. Bumgarner isn't getting much as a 2 month rental who's stats are not exactly Cy Young level.

And the others are bullpen guys
We're not getting a Tatis/Jimenez/Vlad Jr type

On the flip side (for a nominal WS fan), Jimenez was bundled in a package for a 28 year old Jose Quintana, in the midst of his worst season of his career. The difference between him and Bumgarner is that Quintana had a stellar season the year before and had no major injuries in the big leagues. However, a lot can still be had for a big time pitcher in a down season (of course, Quintana may be a warning to GMs, considering his production since coming over to the Cubs).
