Kiffin was Mike Garrett's hire and even at that he was the 3rd choice. I think that he mainly got the job because of his ability to recruit (top 5 classes every year except this most recent and even this one was top 5 in "stars per recruit") and because he was an excellent OC and playcaller under Pete Carroll.
Kiffin is actually a very good coach. The problem is that he just wasn't ready for a job with USC's stature, especially given the sanctions. It may also be that he just isn't head coaching material. Not everyone is. Some guys are career assistants. Nothing wrong with that because top notch assistants are very valuable to any program.
As you said, the fork has been stuck in him, time to move on. I don't see us getting Peterson. I know he's turned us down once and you guys twice. Heck, I think he's turned down every PAC school at least once.
Did you not watch the Notre Dame game last year? Everyone who saw how he handled when USC was on the goal line understands that he was never a good coach. No heart as well watch how Chip Kelly and Todd Graham coach with fire and intensity. Kiffen is one of those guys that couldn't perform a 2nd half comeback because he couldn't get his guys motivated to play.Kiffin is actually a very good coach
