1) Didn't know Rivera's nickname was "Trevor".

2) Didn't know he was eligible next year.

You learn something new every day. Thanks for the education, Hammer.

Completely off topic...

What do you think Hoffman's chances are of getting into the Hall next year?

:pound:

Hoffman should get in w/o much issue. The dude is basically responsible for the position of closer as we know it today.

The guy who didn't need to be be babied the entire 2nd half of his career so he could rack up a bunch of 3 out or less saves and rarely inherit runners?

Mariano either a.) found the mythical fountain of youth, or b.) did like the rest of the team and injected drugs in bathroom stalls before games.

I wonder which? :noidea:

I thought Trevor was great, but he's not the best of all time. Neither is Rivera. Sorry, but they didn't have to pitch more than 1 inning to get a save. Guys like Gossage were pitching two to three innings to get a save when they were playing.

Yeah, Hoffman makes it in next year but as others have said Rivera is the best closer ever not Hoffman.

I am not even 100% certain that Hoff is the 2nd best closer since the position gained prominence. People forget just how amazing Eck was. He absolutely deserves inclusion in the discussion as the 2nd best.

Craig Kimbrel will end up being better than all of them.

Closers (and relievers in general) tend to fizzle out so quickly that it's really hard to predict who'll have a long career and who wouldn't.

Billy Wagner will be the best closer eligible for the HOF next year, but he won't get in.

Sure but league average wasn't exactly that much lower.

The modern closer is probably the biggest waste of money (and talent) in professional sports.
