Evan Grant puts Zak Kent at #25.

No. 25 RHP Zak Kent

Age: 24

Height: 6-2

Weight: 205

B-T: R-R

Who he is: Kent was the Rangers’ ninth-round draft choice in 2019 out of Virginia Military Institute after going undrafted out of high school in Heathsville, Va.. He set a Southern Conference record with 132 strikeouts in 97 innings as a junior at VMI. He received a $140,000 signing bonus.

Why he’s here: His slider, curve and changeup might give him the best off-speed mix in the organization. And he used the power slider (85-87 mph) to make two of the best starts in the organization last year at advanced Class A Hickory, going six no-hit innings and then, two weeks later, allowing two hits in seven shutout innings with 13 strikeouts. It was his last start at Hickory before going to Frisco to finish the season. He threw the slider nearly 40% of the time.

What’s his future: Notice anything missing from the above description? Yeah, the fastball. Which is the kind of thing that keeps a guy from being a big-leaguer. It’s average (93-94 mph) in terms of velocity, but he struggled with command. Here’s the thing though: He’s working on it. He impressed the Rangers by spending virtually all fall and winter at the team’s spring training facility and pitching lab to better shape the pitch. Initial reviews have been very positive.

Where he will start ‘22: He should be in the thick of the Frisco rotation after finishing 2021 with six starts there.

Most interesting. Command seems to be only draw back but can be worked out before reaching the big team rotation if ever.

How many teams should be within $10-20 million of the first CBT threshold to prove that it is a cap? Can't they provide for it to go up a certain amount if that happens? For example, if 7 teams get within $15 million one year, the thresholds go up 7% the following year.

Yes. Just because the raise the CBT/pseudo cap does not mean the owners will increase the spending. We don’t really hear much about this

no all it means is that the teams that put winning above everything else will just spend more while most teams will not move much above what they're spending now and the top of the heap players will just keep getting more.

I think raising the minimum is the key to the owners spending more. It may not increase the competition, and therefore the salary, for the top 15 or 20 free agents every year, but it will for most of the rest.

okay so the players get more but does that mean the teams are going to get better?

I think the floor as mentioned will have more impact on vets who can still play as good but not great players will not get squeezed out as much. But this is not going to happen this time

Today is another "deadline" day. From what I've heard, if a deal is struck today, the games that have been canceled will be made up and we get a 162 game season. If no deal is made, then the next 2 series of the season will be canceled, and the season will be officially shortened.

Guess we will have to be satisfied with either or.
