This secondary is bad. But we all knew that. What we were hoping is that the young guys would also be play-makers. The problem is our two best play makers in the secondary aren't allowed on the field. Sharknado and Boykin need to see the field. Period. I don't know what the Steelers are thinking in regards to that.

Post game thoughts.

Obviously I'm disappointed with the loss...there were plays within the grasp to be in the game or even leading...2 makeable FGs go for naught, DHB OB, Wheaton key drop, NE fumble recovery for 6, etc....take your pick.

The reality is...the DEF has plenty of work cut out. SS & FS are the two top needs...Idk what Blake showed over Boykin but he didn't show it last night.

Mitchell is not a very good FS...this play confirmed it in my mind...on Gronk's TD over him and Golden...a short seam route...Golden has the initial coverage and is not in bad position underneath which forced a high throw (of course no problem for 6'7" athletic TE) Mitchell sees the play develop and closes in...takes a really bad angle and the ball sails over his head for an easy 6.

A good FS lets that play come to him and attacks Gronk and or the ball at it's highest point.

Notables...Bud giveth (1st NFL sack) and taketh away (blown coverage on Gronk)....Williams and the OL were ready to play...Shazier made some plays, but missed some tackles...overall the run DEF did okay vs a hard to tackle RB...JJ made an almost TFL but did little else.

Interesting that McCullers didn't play many snaps.

0-1...lets not go 0-2...need to correct some mistakes and take care of biz in the home opener next week.

I knew the defense was bad and was going to be bad. Like I said, I want Boykin and Shark in there but it's not really what bothered me about last night. If you would have told me that this defense was going to hold the Patriots to 28 this game I would have liked our chances. With this offense? Yeah. But last night...ugh. You have to score. It's the same old song and dance.

But you know...whatever. I still think this team is a pretty good squad. I expect big things from this offense and if the staff gets the right guys on the field I think the defense can be opportunistic.

Side note: Way to go DeAngello Williams. What a stud performance. Guy came to play and left it all on the field.

Good performance by the offense, especially without Bryant & Bell. The defense needs work, especially the secondary, but we all knew that. Is Scobee still employed?

It was. And with what he did, they went and sat him for Nix and Johnson in the backfield when they were on the goal line.

They got too cute with that package, and the end around.

The running lanes were open all night. Williams should have gone over 200 yards.

Just a few thoughts.

Obviously, those who predicted a blowout were wrong, and that's some consolation.

Offense did pretty well with three key men out, but I still find myself questioning Haley's judgment. Our O may be one of the best, but I still think it may be in spite of him, not because of him. What was with that gadget play in the first possession? Save that shit for when you need to CHANGE the momentum, not when you're moving the ball well. But then, just when we seem to need to mix it up more, he gets a little too conservative.

Now for the D. Yes, we knew that the secondary had problems. No surprise there. What bothered me was the general lack of pressure on Plays-in-a-Dress, when he had two ROOKIES in his offensive line. Brady can be beaten, damn it, and the key isn't exactly a national secret. He's one-dimensional, a super-accurate pocket passer, but not mobile. If you concede the first five yards from the line to his receivers, he'll short-pass you to death. That's how he beats you, not with long bombs, but with short stuff.

So the key is not to concede those first five yards, but to use them...by HITTING the receivers in that space, where it's actually legal to do so. That prevents the super-quick completions, and creates time to pressure Brady, flush him from the pocket, and maybe sack his ass. The guy is a fucking prima donna...pressure him, knock him down a few times, and he starts to lose his composure, blame his own teammates, etc. Last night, with iffy protection in front of him, was the perfect opportunity to do just that.

And here's what really bothers me: shouldn't our new DC know everything I just mentioned? He's new to his position, but he's been a part of the Steelers' defensive coaching staff for quite a while...before Tomlin, in fact.

Well, anyway, I remain cautiously optimistic for the remainder of the season. I took my dogs out at halftime, got back a bit late, and it was 21-3. I had visions of a 42-10 final score, and we lost by just a touchdown to the SB champs, in their house.

Sooooooo, we'll keep a good thought.

FWIW, one of the few times the Steelers DB's were in press, the Cheaters ran a pick play for a big gain.

the Steelers cannot go into ANY stadium and make those kinds of mistakes....add in shoddy tackling and well, the end was predictable.

@{+}Mother-Marge{+} What's with the bullshit?

The Cheaters ran a pick play, which was legal, and it went for a big gain.

This is spot on.

Maybe they had him on a pitch count.

It blew up in his face, but I don't mind the trick play...LY AB got 6 out of one...gotta make a freakin FG though.
