Based on their past box office numbers isn’t Sony better off moneywise having 100% of the rights to Spiderman over splitting it 50-50 with Disney? Globally, Amazing Spiderman 1 made $747 million, and Amazing Spiderman 2 made $707 million. Let’s say Sony gets all that money. Now Homecoming did $880 million worldwide and Far From Home is at $1.1 billion. So if Sony/Disney split 50-50, while more critically acclaimed movies, Sony would actually be making less money than if they owned Spiderman outright.

So while a major disappointment to fans if you look at it from a business perspective(just as Disney tried to do when they asked for 50-50 split over the 95-5 deal they currently made) Sony is better off putting out movies that may not be as well received but they get to keep 100% of the profits.

So my question is this, Sony has the Spider-Man brand but not necessarily the story developed that Marvel did right? So are they going to do this all over again where he gets bit by a spider and learns his powers or can they pick up somewhat where they left off?

I think that is what it is Venom did numbers in the box office and people hated it. Regardless they are starting to film part 2 next year and will start their own Spider-Man plan to an eventual blockbuster with Venom and Spiderman

People didn’t hate Venom, critics did but audiences actually liked it. Venom had great word of mouth and ended up with $855 million Worldwide(with 220 of that being US which is huge) because people didn’t listen to critics and actually saw it for themselves.

I really enjoyed it.

too much CGI at times, but I liked the story.

interesting to see a Venom story without Spidey in it though. They always went hand in hand for me growing up.

For those who haven't read the articles on this, Disney and Sony compromised and agreed to a 25% cut for Disney (Sony originally asked for 5%, and Disney originally asked for 50%).

But in true Peter Parker-underdog fashion, an unlikely hero emerged to reconcile the two warring factions less than six weeks later: Holland himself. Sources say the star, 23, made multiple appeals to Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger and Sony film chairman Tom Rothman to reach a resolution, announced Sept. 27, for Marvel to produce a third Spider-Man movie for Sony, and for the character to appear in at least one additional Disney-Marvel film.

Holland began flexing his diplomacy after the D23 wrapped Aug. 25. He leaned on Rothman to re-engage with Disney (the actor was able to leverage his clout because he also is set to star in Sony's Uncharted) and also surprisingly reached out to Iger, beseeching one of Hollywood's most powerful executives to return to the table.

Eventually, a thaw began between Sony and Disney after Holland showed them the outpouring of fan support. In the end, the new deal had something for everyone. Disney won a considerable stake in a new movie, up from a nominal producing fee that sources say amounted to less than 5 percent of the gross for each of the first two Spider-Man films.

Sony gets the Marvel treatment and imprimatur for a third movie (and who knows, maybe more). And moviegoers can enjoy a resolution to a cliffhanger and a happy ending for a beloved character.

There is a rumor out there that Disney wants to buy Spider-Man back and pay as much as 5 billion for him.

Considering they paid 4 billion for all of Lucasfilm, 4 billion for all of Marvel and 7.4 for Pixar, I have a hard time believing Spider-Man is worth 4 to 5 billion.

I agree that 5B sounds steep, but the ip could be considered the most valuable in all of Marvel.

What would be included? Would they get the entire package, or ONLY Spidey? Would they then own the previous 6 or 7 live action movies? Would they own Venom? The entire rogues gallery? How about the 70s tv show? Who owns that currently?
