First, I expected the departure of Demarco Murray and am good with that. It didn't make sense for Dallas to pay him the kind of money he got.

I am more disappointed in the lack of effort to bring back one of either Carter or Durant at LB. Dallas needed to pony up the cash for one of them IMO. It was a mistake to let them both walk. And bringing back McClain is no sure thing either. I felt it was necessary that Dallas needed to bring back most of the existing talent in the LB corp. The reason I feel this is so important is because while Dallas has some talented guys, they are not very durable and quality depth behind the likes of Lee and (possibly) McClain is crucial. Right now we are counting on Keith Rivers to be the primary back up -- maybe even start if McClain isn't back -- and Rivers has done absolutely nothing in the NFL.

The defense needed to have one unit that didn't need attention going into the draft. Now Dallas is looking at needing talent at all 3 levels of the defense heading into the draft. With the likelyhood that Dallas drafts a RB in the first 3 rounds higher than ever, it seems that there will likely be some holes on the defense going into training camp.

Not sure I understand restructuring Tyron Smith's contract this early in the game since Dallas didn't have any agreements in place that required the cap space.

So stressed we gotta have two threads on it? It could be worse, Jerry could have broke the bank on every FA and traded two 1st rd picks for a WR.

I for one am glad we didn't overspend on a few FA's.

I'm glad we didn't give Murray $8M per or whatever PHI gave him. If we can get a guy that gives us 1400 yards for half that (or less), then I'm thrilled. If he gives us 1200 yards and half the fumbles, I'm even happier.

I'm happy with this new found restraint.

Everything from the last couple of years makes it sound like Jerry is just the front man and Stephen is calling all the GM-type shots now.

I think this is Stephen as well. I also think there is some football wisdom involved and it's pretty darn good to see

I agree with this Add Melton to the list I think he brought a toughness and leader ship he and Spencer. I actually hate to see Carter leave he has had a roller coaster career so far, but he took a huge step forward last year IMO. I actually believe losing these guys will hurt way more than losing Murray. Of coarse Jerry and friends expect the Return of Sean Lee to be a better version of Carter "he's without question a better player" but with him coming off of an ACL injury I don't expect him to be the same player. If this guy could stay healthy he'd be an all pro.

Eagles greatly overpaid for murray. Jerrah has not had much luck in high priced fa. The de the patriots signed would have been nice. I think if we could get greg hardy cheap we need to take the gamble. Cromartie is the other guy I wanted

Any chance that Claiborne actually make a contribution to this team this year?

I don't think they overpaid for Murray. I do think they paid him full value. The point is whether or not giving him $8M per was the best use of cap space and team set up. I think it was a mistake, but if Murray stays healthy I see him being dominant. Like I said yesterday the really dumb move was moving forward with Mathews. Murray, Sproles and Polk was already a little bit crowded. Throw in Mathews and it becomes kind of bizarre

Tony Romo carries a $27.773 million salary-cap figure. Dez Bryant carries a $12.823 million cap figure on the franchise tag. Tyron Smith had his contract restructured and carries a salary-cap figure of $5.039 million.

The Cowboys could have fit Murray into the cap this year, even on the deal the Philadelphia Eagles paid him. The Cowboys did not want to commit the guaranteed money to Murray that Philadelphia committed to him.

But it would have tilted the money to the offensive side of the ball even more.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Cowboys have allotted $76.16 million to the offensive side of the ball in 2015 and just $48.46 million to the defense.

If Jerry hasn't fully given up the reins, he is at least listening to the good people he has in place now. Just in the last year, the Cowboys have let Ware, Hatcher and Murray walk and passed on Johnny Football. If it were business as usual, all those guys would be on the team, Romo would have been reworked, and the team would already be over the cap through 2020 lol

That is a huge disparity between Offense and Defense, but in the NFL QBs make the big cash. If you take Romo out of the equation it's pretty much exactly 50/50.

I'm starting to wonder if we just let Dez play out the year on the tag. There was pressure to sign him and lower his cap number to sign Murray, but what benefit is there now? I guess you can say he will get a huge 5 year deal this year or next year, so might as well start the clock while he is a year younger and thus a year more likely to still be worth it at the end of the deal.

We already have plenty of cap room to operate this year. Like I said the other day, did we restructure Smith too early? Maybe it would have been better to wait in case we didn't need all of the space this year and just chip away at some more of his cap hit this year. I still see McClain in our future and bet we sign a DE or two - could be our FAs or some others. Wonder what their thoughts are on Hardy

You discuss everyone and everything but I don't think they give Hardy a second thought.

There was something to be said about the scouting and coaching last year. I think they'll add another mid-level player or two. The DT Miami cut to make room for Suh is a pretty good player and would fit a dline rotation pretty good. Who knows when June 1st cuts happen. I think Dallas will spend some money according to their plans and mission to filling out this roster.
