I guess I'd ask what their options are? Unless you think Penix, Maye, etc is THEE guy, the answer almost has to be re-signing Goff. Unless Hooker is the guy, which I kinda doubt if this is a question.

The Lions are good and will probably be good the next 3 years without significant restructuring on their core roster. If they draft well to support that cool. That points to re-signing Goff unless you're deadset on getting a QB in this draft, no matter the cost.

Personally I REALLY like Penix for the most part, but I am not sure I'd go gangbusters from Detroit's spot in the draft for him either.
Didn't they select the QB from Tennessee in the last draft?

Maybe. But if this is a thread, a 3rd rounder isn't stopping anything, imo.

1) Re-sign Goff

2) Start Hooker

3) Trade up for QB (like say Penix)

4) Tank for no obvious reason other than being cheap

No, but the alternative is also a shit ton worse like Minshew or something, if you're lucky.
What more do you think Goff could have done this season? I thought he was fantastic. Great stats all around.

Win MVP.

He's been good, but he'd struggle to get into top 10 lists most years. That's kind of the bind here, imo.
Have you looked at his stats? He’s had a great career. :noidea:

He's 11th (including the playoff game) in EPA+CPOE composite with a strong surrounding cast. That's good, not great.
Can you send me a list of the top 10 on that list?

But I'd put all 3 guys you mentioned over Goff.
Is that because of his past or his present ability to lead a team?
I mean I can't come up with a better argument to take him over the others, except his current profile is better than the previous one ( maybe the system, maybe the talent helps him )

I don't think there is a wider gap of play on pressured vs unpressured QB play than you get with Goff. Goff is borderline elite when the pocket is clean, he is bottom half when it isn't. Lions oline to date has given him far more clean pockets than not. If they keep that core intact I am confident he is plenty good enough to win it all.

It is not a coincidence that the Lions midseason slump lined up with injuries to the interior of the line.

So far so good. He's not good when pressured and doesn't move very well which will keep him short of elite status imo. But if they can keep the OL intact.. and the rest of the offense really, he doesn't need to be great under pressure.

CPOE+EPA Composite, sequential order, minimum of 304 plays; includes playoff games played to this post. This had a LOT of down years, keep in mind. Goff was 11th at .114.

Brock Purdy.204
Dak Prescott.159
Josh Allen.145
Kirk Cousins.134
Jordan Love.125
Jalen Hurts.124
Jake Browning (yes, him).121
Tua Tagovailoa.120
Patrick Mahomes II.119
Lamar Jackson.119

So you’re saying this is a good measuring stick of who the best QB’s were this season?

Technically, it would be the best single stat to do so. Football is hard and a team game though. Purdy is very unlikely to be the best QB in football, imo. Browning is not a borderline top 5 QB.

If you expand the sample which would be a lot better way to evaluate this, Goff's career is basically a career average QB with some volume going off of 2023-24 numbers, which... is about right, imo.

I won't repeat that, but that DEFINITELY would track watching Goff with the eye-test. This is why I implied Goff, along with Tua, are frontrunners in another thread.

he does,nt turn the ball over much which is great.
He’s #2 in passing yards, top 5 in TD’s and 67% completion percentage. There is a lot more greatness in there. Maybe not top 5 overall QB, but certainly top 10 (I’d say closer to #5 than #10)

Goff still has one more year left on his contract worth about $31 million in 2024.

Should the Lions go ahead and re-sign him this offseason or wait till next season?

I think most people put Goff around $40 million per year for a 4-5 year extension. Goff will be 30 during next season.

If you’re the Lions do you jump ahead and get him signed, or wait and see (which could drive his price up)?

Do you think he'll sign for $40M per year? I think that's probably low at this point, especially if you think he's in the top 10. QBs in their prime tend to push the QB salaries higher, not just get small incremental raises.

I guess I don’t see his career anywhere near average. I would guess he near top 5 in passing yards, TD’s, and completion percentage since 2017. On top of that, he likely quite a bit higher than average in playoff wins in that time period (more of a team thing, but still a worthy stat).
