yeah, alot of drafted players are 17 on draft day. none have to go pro for at least 3 years (more for college) and even then a year or two in the AHL is pretty standard fare. The 2008 draft should be coming to fruition now with the 09 draft on deck. The 2010 class may go pro for the first time next year, so we likely wont see them for another year or two.

the key guys now are from the 2004-2008 draft years. Older than that (2003 or less) are already UFA qualified and therefore dont necessary help build depth in a cheap way. The 2009ers are just 21 now, and there arent many 21 year olds who are awesome.

the problem for the sharks is the extremely low quality of their 2004-2008 draft years. The only really good players from those years are seto, pickles, and cooch. Some others are reasonable, but arent the kind of guys to lead a team to a cup. And, cooch is the only one there who is really good as a bona fide top 6 forward or top pair D.

Part of the reason for that dearth of talent is multiple deadline deals of 1st and 2nd rounders. part is "off the board" picks. part is trades of prospects for established players. Part is a drafting style that favors midlevel players who are more likely to make the league than the flashier picks but less likely to become real stars (think pavelski-like guys). Whatever the reason, the sharks' cupboard is pretty much bare, so they are gunna have to be clever with UFA's and the like.

Maybe we'll get lucky and one of the 2010 class will be a pleasant shock, and suddenly we'll have a 20 or 21 year old stud rookie :-)
