Tre’ Morgan’s “Spider-Man Stretch” Showed LSU Infielder’s Incredible Flexibility

Patrick Pinak, April 28, 2021 8:08 am
First base isn?t typically where you?d expect to find the most athletic player on the field. Shortstop and center field usually takes care of that.

For every slick-fielding Don Mattingly or Todd Helton, there?s 10 more Prince Fielders or Adam Dunns who act more like paperweights over on the slow corner. It?s common for coaches to stick their oversized sluggers where they only have to worry about catching.
First base isn?t typically where you?d expect to find the most athletic player on the field. Shortstop and center field usually takes care of that.

That being said, an athletic first baseman can change a game. He can turn errant throws into outs. He can rob dudes of hits. He can impact a game in way more ways that most fans realize.

That?s what LSU first baseman Tre? Morgan does every single game, and his ?Spider-Man? stretches are proof he?s the most athletic at his position in the NCAA.

of picks and penalties..and losses..and gains...i would not want to penalize HS picks..for..free agents signs else where....
so i would go with the collage draft...for that..........and it would be more.....immediate ..cuz....collage guys can make the big leagues..

in 2 to 3 years..

it really is apples and oranges.......HS..and collage....

then..internationals..is like pears...but.that is soon..

When the MLB Lockout began this past Thursday, there was still a lot of confusion as to if the 2021-22 MLB International Signing Day would still take place or be delayed. Through multiple contacts that deal with international players, and Major League Baseball I've been able to ascertain that the January 15, 2022 signing day will still take place.

Mariners open “2021” international amateur signing period with three seven-figure deal

lookoutlanding.com/2022/1/16/22886204/seattle-mariners-2020-21-international-amateur-signing-lazaro-montes-maicol-arroyo-martin-gonzalez

OF Lázaro Montes - $2.5 million

This enormous 17-year-old Cuban is who graces the cover photo for this article, dwarfing Nelson Cruz as he stands a reported 6’4, 215. At the moment Montes is reportedly a center fielder with solid mobility, though it’s quite likely he adds more strength as he ages and shifts to a corner outfield spot or even first base. At present, however, he moves well and with impressive fluidity given his age and size.

The lefty swinging youth has impressive bat speed and a sweet swooping swing that gears well for loft without getting too long. He has been training with the same trainer in the Dominican Republic as current Astros slugger (and fellow Cuban) Yordan Alvarez did, and is generally viewed as one of the top players in this year’s class. His bonus reflects that, as it is more than the club signed either Julio Rodríguez or Noelvi Marte for in their respective classes. As far as I can tell, the bonus Montes commanded makes him the highest-paid international amateur ever signed by Seattle, and certainly in the bonus pool era.

SS Martín González - $1.3 million

Reputationally, the 17-year-old Dominican is one of the best defensive shortstops in the class, with noticeably improved physicality that should help him hang offensively and hopefully be a contact-heavy middle infielder with enough pop to progress. He is fluid and should have little trouble sticking up the middle with his glove.

INF Maicol Arroyo - $1.3 million..

The top-paid (by signing bonus) player from the country of Colombia both this year and in the nation’s history, Arroyo’s reports highlight his offensive skillset, in particular within high-level travel ball both within his home nation and in showcases like the Future Stars Series here in the United States. Like most players at Arroyo’s age, he is listed as a shortstop, but at least early reads note he may shift to either third or second base depending on his physical progression. Reports commend his ability to put quality contact on the ball in both practice and game situations, but the 17-year-old may depend on his physical development for his ultimate future home. Also, in case your friends ask: no relation to Mariners recent 2nd round pick Edwin Arroyo, who is Puerto Rican. Also also, reports have his name as “Michael Arroyo” which he may well adopt in the pros. He appears to spell it “Maicol” himself however, which makes more sense written out in Spanish. When the club officially announces these moves soon we should hear clarification.

Lookout Landing
@LookoutLanding

Looks like new international signee Maicol Arroyo (Cartagena, ), in addition to signing the largest bonus ever for a Colombian player, will also receive some significant money from the Mariners (100k) for his schooling, as is standard for prep draftees in the US. Good to see.

RHP Eduardo Tovar

This is confusing, and goes off the Baseball America list, which is exceptional but not official from the team. It seems likely it is a new normal signee, but could also be recently released Venezuelan RHP Oscar Eduardo Tovar, who is a former Oakland Athletics minor leaguer and just 23 years old. More likely, it is a common enough name that this is simply coincidental. Clarity should be forthcoming.

The Mariners will also sign Guatemalan RHP Sebastian Barrios in this 2021 international class. Barrios has a 6-foot-1-inch, 170-pound frame. It's an extremely quick arm with long levers and projection. He's been up to 89 with fantastic feel for a curveball.

This Guatemalan righty has not had his name reported by BA or MLBP, however we’ve seen him linked to the Mariners through multiple sources, and it seems as though he should be among the names listed when Seattle officially announces their group this week

RHP Marco Patiño

Mexican righty, more info when we have it, but here is his Instagram.

SS Joaan de Jesus

Another shortstop from the Dominican Republic! More info hopefully to come.

RHP Eduardo Tovar

PITCHING COACH
AUSTIN KNIGHT

Carson Whisenhunt

CARSON WHISENHUNT

SOPHOMORE MOCKSVILLE DAVIE COUNTY

Austin Knight, who served two years as the volunteer assistant coach at East Carolina, was officially named the Pirates’ pitching coach on July 7, 2021. Knight will also continue to work as ECU's camp coordinator.

A four-year letterman at Ole Miss (2012-15), Knight worked alongside former ECU pitching and current Cal State Fullerton Head Coach Jason Dietrich helping the Pirates to a 44-17 overall record in 2021, the American Athletic Conference regular season title, NCAA Greenville Regional championship as the No. 13 National Seed and an appearance in the Nashville Super Regional.

ECU’s staff led The American in nine statistical categories including ERA (4.03), fewest runs allowed (264), opponent batting average (.239), saves (19), strikeouts looking (160), total strikeouts (626) and wins (44). On a national scale, they ranked among the top 40 in six pitching columns strikeouts per 9 innings (18th/10.5), strikeout to walk ratio (22nd/2.98), WHIP (24th/1.29), hits allowed per 9 innings (31st/8.06), shutouts (38th/five) and ERA (39th).

Knight, who came to ECU on Sept. 4, 2019, spent two years at Louisiana Tech as the volunteer assistant coach working primarily with the catchers, while serving as the Bulldogs camp coordinator and helping with baseball operations under head coach Lane Burroughs. During his two seasons, the Bulldogs posted a 73-44 record that included a pair of top three finishes in Conference USA (second in 2018). Knight’s catchers allowed just 14 passed balls over two seasons and threw out 32 percent of would-be base stealers in 2018, which stood fourth in the league.

Prior to his stint at LA Tech, Knight spent two seasons as a graduate manager at the University of Arkansas Little Rock working under head coach Chris Curry. During that time with the Trojans, he worked with the catchers and assisted with all aspects of the program’s recruiting and traveling.

While at Little Rock, Knight spent two summers as an assistant baseball coach for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Collegiate Baseball League tutoring some of the top young catchers in the country. Brent Diaz, a 2017 Johnny Bench Award finalist, not only saw an increase in power numbers but also saw his average rise nearly 60 points from 2016 to 2017. While in the Cape Cod League, Knight also coached Matt Whatley, a third-round pick by the Oakland A’s and winner of the 2017 Johnny Bench Award. Overall, he worked with five catchers who were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft.

Before making the leap into coaching, Knight played collegiately at Ole Miss under head coach Mike Bianco where he helped the Rebels to a 153 wins, four NCAA Regionals and an appearance in the 2014 College World Series. With Godwin’s tutelage, then an Ole Miss assistant coach, Knight appeared in over 120 games, was a two-time SEC Honor Roll selection and three-time scholar-athlete.

A native of Hattiesburg, Miss., Knight received his undergraduate degree in business management from Ole Miss in 2015 and his masters in sports management from Little Rock in 2017. He is married to the former Taylor Rigney of Hattiesburg, Miss., and currently resides in Greenville, N.C. with their son Deacon.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT KNIGHT …
“We are super excited about Austin taking over as our pitching coach. He has worked tirelessly in assisting Coach Dietrich for the past two seasons and has been a huge part of the success we have had on the mound during that time. Austin is a rising star and we are pumped that he is our pitching coach.” – Cliff Godwin, East Carolina Head Baseball Coach

“Austin is part of our long legacy of great catchers and a member of our 2014 CWS team. Now, he is a rising star in the coaching profession. I have no doubt that he will do a tremendous job with the ECU pitching staff and continue their development of great young pitchers.” – Mike Bianco, Ole Miss Head Baseball Coach

“Austin was one of the first coaches to really sit down with me to help me learn and develop a third pitch in the Cape. He was knowledgeable and open-minded in the pitch development process, which helped us connect instantly. This gave me confidence to trust my stuff and pitch freely. I am excited to see him excel with this opportunity.” – Kris Bubic, Kansas City Royals 40th overall pick in 2017 MLB Draft

“I’m very excited and happy for Austin to be named the new ECU pitching coach. AK was my right hand man for the last two years and during that time he was very instrumental in the development of the ECU pitchers. He is very detailed orientated, has a high baseball IQ and knows how to relate to the players. The ECU pitchers are in good hands and I’m excited to see AK work his magic next year. Go Pirates!” – Jason Dietrich, Cal State Fullerton Head Baseball Coach

“I am really excited for Austin Knight and the Pirate baseball program. Having the opportunity to work with Austin as part of our staff with the YD Red Sox in the Cape Cod League, I can tell you Austin is an endless worker with a wealth of knowledge. He will have an immediate impact in ECU Baseball program. The young man can teach and will make players better. Austin’s promotion for the Pirates Baseball team will have a positive impact.” – Scott “Pick” Pickler, Cape Cod Hall of Fame Coach

“Austin is one of the most knowledgeable and trusted coaches I have ever worked with and been around. As a former catcher and working with Coach Dietrich the last two seasons, he knows a lot about pitching. AK is someone that is going to push you and help you tap into your fullest potential. I am excited to watch him lead the Pirates pitching staff for years to come.” – Gavin Williams, East Carolina 2021 Consensus All-American and American Athletic Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year
