Washington Newcomers Ranked No. 20 By D1 Baseball

SEATTLE -- The Washington baseball team is locked and loaded for a big 2022 season, in part due to a group of new Huskies ranked No. 20 in the country by D1 Baseball.

This year's UW team features a talented blend of transfers and incoming freshmen.

Among those listed by D1 Baseball include true freshmen infielders Cam Clayton (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and AJ Guerrero (Fife, Wash.), who received praise for their physical tools and advanced makeups that can allow them to contribute early to the Huskies.

Transfer pitchers Jared Engman (Tacoma CC) and Colton McIntosh (Paradise Valley CC) were lauded for their live arms on the mound and ability to make hitters miss.

Other newcomers mentioned include transfer Coby Morales (Cypress College) and freshmen Colby Wallace (Ranch Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Kyle Fossum (Sammamish, Wash.), who all possess imposing physical tools and offensive prowess.

Washington opens its season in just over a month on February 18th on the road at Cal Poly.

UW Recruiting Class Ranked No. 24 by Baseball America

SEATTLE -- Very soon, an extremely deep and talented group of newcomers will step foot on campus at the University of Washington. And on Wednesday, Baseball America named this group the 24th-best recruiting class in the country.

The Huskies' class of incoming freshmen is led by a pair of local products in Max Debiec (West Seattle, Wash.) and AJ Guerrero (Fife, Wash.). Debiec, a right-handed pitcher, is ranked as the No. 161 overall recruit in the country by Baseball America. An infielder/outfielder, Guerrero is the 475th-ranked recruit nationally and has displayed elite offensive potential.

UW once again had a very successful cycle recruiting the junior college ranks and was able to greatly bolster its pitching staff this time around. Bryce Armstrong (Corning, Calif.) is a big-time lefty who put up stellar numbers at Butte College last season. Jared Engman (Kent, Wash.) brings a big arm and physical presence to Montlake. He is a local prospect out of Kent, played at Tacoma Community College and played summer ball out in Wenatchee with the AppleSox this year.

Stay tuned for more news on the Husky newcomers as they are s

The Washington men's baseball team opens its season this Friday against Cal Poly.

This offseason, head coach Lindsay Meggs added Andy Jenkinsto the Husky staff as the hitting coach. Jenkins works with the catchers as well and will coach third base.

Catchers

At the catcher position, UW returns the experience of Johnny Tincher, who started nine games in 2021 and showcased his elite defensive ability in his action.

The Huskies also added graduate transfer Ben Smith from Biola University. A local player out of Sammamish, Wash., Smith played in 41 games over two season at Biola, hitting four home runs with 22 RBI, while putting together a .742 OPS. Rounding out the catchers are Jake Leitgeb, who did not see action last season and true freshman Colin Blanchard.
True freshman A.J. Guerrero (Fife, Wash.) was considered one of the top offensive prospects in the entire region for the 2021 class and is a difference maker with his bat, while showing the ability to play the corner outfield spots.
