For the record, I took the statement above to mean that the team was not ready to challenge a good team in the playoffs this season. I disagree with that. Our QB puts us at a disadvantage against quite a few teams, but when our D is playing well - as they have consistently throughout the season - we can hang with most everyone. A short week, especially with the travel, will hurt us more than a very experienced team like the Ravens, especially since they've been using effectively the same system for several years. Given a full week or more to prep, though, I think we can hang with the class of the NFL.

If you meant something else by "there," let me know.

By "there" I meant as a superior team in the class of the league's best. In my opinion, despite the 9 and 2 record, they are still a notch below the league's elite. I think the 49ers would agree that the pass rush, the wide receiving corps, the O line and the Quarterback position need improving.

Right now I'd say QB is the only absolutely glaring weakness. The OL is better than they played this week, the skill positions are more than adequate if we include TE - though it seems every receiver is inconsistent, and the D is good even with a mediocre pass rush. Every team has weaknesses, some of them glaring. The Niners are quite solid most places.

Precisely! I think you and I are two of only a few on this board that watched in full consciousness the entire string of greatness that began in '81. Today's 49ers are a good, well coached team, but not elite - not yet.

whoa, you'd be surprised how many here are old enough for 1981. :-)

yeah, we're a good team but not elite. but very happy we're good, no question.

Haha, you too? My guess is that most on this board were born 'around' the time we drafted Joe.

yep, sometimes its ok being older, but old fart i am.

ok, if the majority are born around 1981, i can believe it. but one time there was a thread asking about when each was a 49er fan, was surprised to see how many dated back to BEFORE 1981.

i go back to John Brodie, who's that you say? haaa

Yep, John Brodie, Kezar Stadium and the early Dallas heartbreaks are all permanently lodged in what ever is left of my memory.

I know, right! <jsmh>

Yep. I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt, and you're either forgetful or a liar. For now I'll assume the former, but if that's the case, we're getting to the point of senility.

Crimson, it took you three minutes to find that link - it took me 3 seconds to go to my list of links, hold down the Control button and Click on it.

I am many things of which forgetful is occasionally one; however, liar - never is.

Here, allow me to give you a clue for future reference. When someone says to you:

"Please provide this evidence in full, and in accurate context. Also, provide direct evidence and not some ridiculous interpretation."

There is a 100% chance they know exactly the pond from which you will fish your evidence, and they also know your tendencies and precisely how you will attempt to spin, twist, omit part of, change or even invent evidence in an obsessive, often times psychotic need to be right.

Trust me Crimson, you will never win an argument with me or anyone as long as you resort to these childish tactics.

Sorry, MW, the fact is that you were bitch-slapped yet again. I provided a link to the entire thread. The context is all there. If I'm misinterpreting what you said, feel free to explain it to me. Of just accept the simple reality: that there's no doubt what your claim was, and no doubt that I accurately restated it.

Or feel free to continue to be a gutless little pansy and avoid the substantive discussion. It's the same act we've come to expect from you, after all.

Btw, according to your most recent claim, you knew what your past statement was, knew what my statement was, must have known that they were substantively the same, and still accused me of lying. Looks to me like you've outed yourself as the liar from the very start, as your knowledge of the falsity was the only piece of the puzzle that was in doubt.

There is good news: they say acceptance is the first step in recovery.

Right on brother. Those were some dominant teams. There were quite a few games on the schedule in those days where the opposing team had no chance; absolutely none and they knew it.

The salary cap did in that sort of dominance. Teams today aren't as complete as they were in the '80s and early '90s. Expecting that sort of dominance to return is unrealistic in today's NFL, though an elite QB can get you close.

Those Brodie-led team are my first recollection as well. I remember Clifton Mcneil leading the league in receiving and then the following year drafting Ted Kwaick and Gene Washington. Perrennial All pros Dave Woilcox and Jimmie Johnson led the defense.
