He's working on his degree with a goal to get into med school.

Props to him for that but after seeing him gimp around the last games of last season I wasthinking he shouldn't put his body through the abuse of another season in college.

I would still classify Herbert as 'likely' to return, but it's not a slam dunk. He wants to play with his brother, but also quite a few scouts are cautious now after he dinged his shoulder against the beavs and his teams lackluster season. His numbers alone will still make him a high draft pick, but some have dropped him from top QB.

Hard to pass up that high $$$ contract and risk falling hard with an injury. I hope if he does stay it doesn't come back to bite him in the ass. He deserves to get his payday.

I do want the kid to return. UW is 1-1 against him and I'd love to see them shove his ass out the door with another L at Montlake. UW took the north this year with him down there and at full health. Always a bit more hollow when the team you beat for the title doesn't have their stars.

SOME (by no means all) of our problem this year was being a young team. Hopefully, this speaks well for the future.

The future looks brighter. Pittman staying was pretty huge . Guess who was seen on the Mater dei sidelines last night at Cerritos College at the CIF final game against De La Salle. I hear Bru Mccoy is liking the choice.

One of the most encouraging things, imo, was that Pittman said he was coming back even before the firings and the hiring of Kingsbury. Tells me that, at the least, Helton didn't lose the team (unlike both Kiffin and Sark prior to their firings) and guys still want to play here.

From what I've heard, Bru is friends with JT and Amon-Ra, so I don't think there was much chance that USC would lose him. But him liking the hire can only help in keeping it that way.

It will be interesting to see how Helton fills out the rest of the staff. Heard anything?

It's almost always a mistake for a guy who is considered a high draft pick, to stay in school.

Players, especially quarterbacks, should take a lesson from both Matt Leinart and Matt Barkley. Leinart stayed in school, had stats that were every bit as good as his junior year and played in the NC game, but fell from a likely #1 to #10 in the draft.

Matt Barkley had the team unravel on him when he stayed and fell from a projected #1 pick to the 4th round, even though he had the 2nd highest passer rating of his USC career that season.

Both guys lost a lot money by staying.

Most of us assume it’ll be Eason. They’ll open it up though. Knowing Petersen it’ll be a “game day decision.”

If you ask the media they will probably mostly say Eason because they presume with his arm strength/size and SEC starting history he's a lead, but that's not how Petersen works. I'd still give him the edge simply because of that size and arm. Former UW/NFL QB Hugh Millen describes him as having the strongest arm he's ever seen. But.. there's a reason a frosh moved past him at Georgia.

Petersen has traditionally liked a QB that can take the top off a defense and force safeties to stay home. Eason is at least very attractive to him then. He's been on the practice squad all year so the coaches have some familiarity with his skills going into spring ball.

There are 3 others though which is a GREAT problem to have isn't it?

Haener: Most experienced of the 3 with at least a few plays of live fire, however his one time in a pressure situation lost the game and he looked way out of his element. 3* kid with some upside in skills, but not sure he has it between the ears to run a team. 6'0' and under 200lbs and a pro style QB that isn't any type of threat on the ground. Not my top choice. Think he's a Jr next year.

Sirmon: Red shirted this year. 6'5" and around 230ish. Pro style 4* that looks the part. Looked pretty good in the elite 11 finals and other such camps. Was listed as the 6th overall pro style coming out of HS. I like this kid a lot and if Eason doesn't have it, I'd probably lean toward this one.

Yankoff (ffs that name...): Also red shirted this year. 6'4" and around 205 dual threat that was also a 4* and ranked 6th nationally for dual threats. Makes good decisions and can pull it down and take off. Adds another element, but hasn't shown he can take the top off a defense like Eason and Sirmon can. Don't recall Petersen running an offense built around a dual threat before, but obviously there are upsides to adapting to that as really mobile QB's give defenses fits. He may not make as many explosive plays as those other two, but could keep drives alive more consistently.

I would rank them right now:
Eason
Sirmon
Yankoff
Haener

But I'm not handing it to Eason just yet. It's going to be a real battle in the spring. Staff has worked with all 4 so there are no mysteries for them. We will see which one looks like they are advancing the most and look ready enough to take on the role. I wouldn't even bank on a true #1 to be named before sometime in fall camp. I could see Petersen keeping them all on their toes right up to then to keep them working hard.

I hope he is at least getting those examples and has all the tools to make a decision he can live with. While I'd love to see him stay and take another crack at a team he is leading, I really also don't want to see a talent kid lose out on money.

I think Harry is the jr to declare so far from the Pac isn't he?

How many years left on scholarship for him?
He can play two more, but almost everyone believes if he gets the nod he's a one and done looking to build an NFL profile and leaving.

Home town kid that left for the SEC and came back only because he lost his gig there. Not a lot of reasons for him to stay unless his stock isn't high enough after one season.

He has two years of eligibility. But if he has a good year and leaves, Yankoff and Sirmon will be redshirt sophomores and one should be ready to take over after a year behind Eason. We’re pretty set at the position (on paper) for the foreseeable future.

And more in the wings yet. Couple of more coming in that also look insanely good. Even a few years from now when Huard takes over Montlake. That kid looks really really good.

Lots of rumors but nothing solid. Some still think Clancy will leave but I don't think that's going to happen. I hear they want an NFL guy for the D line which hopefully happens. One other good thing from the Kingsbury hiring is the perception of the program. It's went from dumpster fire to getting the one guy everyone said they needed and with that I think the level of the other assistants will go up.
Texas was really trying to sway Mccoy with all the turmoil at SC.He was there for the USC Texas game as their visitor and they made quite an impression. I was at that game and that was a crazy atmosphere. But I think that will stop now.
