I don't think there's any expectation that Iginla or Morrow hang around, but yeah, Shero has his work cut out for him. No question the Pens went all in this season. They don't have a 1st or 2nd this year or a 2nd next year as a result of trades and they've only got 5 guys signed (one of which is MAF) past next season, not counting minors/juniors.

So, the Penguins will be in the market for a goalie in an off season when Luongo, Bryzgalov and Miller are the ones available.

So will the Flyers. And if they stand pat, they must rely on Mason.

The Devs struggled. And Marty will probably hang 'em up.
and the Rangers could be coached by Lindy Ruff or Mark Messier.

Suddenly, I am not so afraid of coming to that division.

It actually wouldn't shock me if Marty plays after next season. He's still a top 10 goaltender when he's on, and despite his record and the Devils performance this year he actually played well.

I still have Brodeur in the mix for Team Canada in Sochi (provided NHL players go). I don't know if that's praising the play of Brodeur or more of an indictment of the current state of Canadian goaltending.

Woodley detailing the proposed changes to goalie pads

Schneider on Competition Committee, Gear Changes - The Goalie Magazine - InGoalMag.com

1. Continued use of the individual sizing chart, but with a reduction in the thigh rise from 55 per cent of each goalie’s measurement from the knee to hip, down to 40 per cent. The NHL targeted a 50 per cent maximum eight years ago, but it was negotiated up to 55 per cent by the NHLPA. Given the average total measurement in the League is around 20 inches, a 15 per cent reduction would equate to three lost inches in pad height. Of course that is three inches per pad, and given most goalies use the top of these pads to close the 5-hole when they are down on the ice, that could mean an additional six-inch opening.

I really think the goalie pads should be done similar to stick length. Put a maximum total size but then allow the players to choose their own sizes within the acceptable range. Don't automatically tie it to the size of the player, because just like with any piece of equipment, different guys will prefer different fits.

Then put in a waiver system for larger guys. Just like Chara (among others) can get a special waiver for a longer stick, give a guy like Ben Bishop a special waiver for larger pads if he asks for it.

I don't like the idea of mandatory cuts in goalie equipment size though, because that's how goalies get hurt.

Marty has 1 year left on his contract.

As for the trade market for goalies it's stacked. Jaroslav Halak is definately available from the Blues. Anaheim could trade Jonus Hiller. Both will be UFA's at the end of the season. The #1 goalie on the trade market however is a backup. The happiest GM in the league if more teams need goalies will be Dean Lombardi. The price for Jonathan Bernier isn't going down anytime soon.

As for the UFA's there's Mike Smith, Nicklas Backstrom, Ray Emery, Anton Khudobin & Thomas Greiss to name a few.

I'd take any of the ones I mentioned on the Islanders instead of the three you did, considering their contracts.

I hadn't thought of Halak. St Lou is pretty set.

But remember this is Shero I'm talking about. He doesn't make sensible trades. He makes splashes that ultimately fail to get the job done. He's not going to get a guy like Halak or Smith, that would be too smart. He's going for a headline grabber like Luongo. And of course Philly's overpayment is directly proportional to the overpayment around them. So, if Luongo goes to Pitt, they will jump all over Miller. Doesn't matter who Philly gets, anyway. By December they wlll be shattered.

Trading Hiller would be a huge mistake for Anaheim. Yes, Fasth had a good first season, but the sophmore jinx is notoriously harsh on goalies. Wait until the deadline at least.

I'd imagine the market for Emery is limited, and I am not sold on Greiss or Khudobin, although both showed great potential. Wild letting Backstrom walk would be a dumb move too.

... Wild letting Backstrom walk would be a dumb move too.

I'm really on the fence on this one. He can be awfully streaky; more so than makes a lot of Wild fans comfortable. That being said, Harding's medical situation REALLY makes people nervous, and Kuemper isn't ready for prime time yet, so Minny needs Backs' experience.

... or at least someone with his kind of experience. If Fletcher can find a suitable replacement on the market - maybe a couple of years younger & $1 mil or so cheaper - he might just be tempted to go for it.

My team needs a goalie, but I don't want any of the three you mentioned. I was just pointing out there are quite a few goalies available. Whether the Ducks trade Hiller or not will depend on how Gibson looks in training camp.

As for the Pens they have a lot of cap space & some BIG decisions to make that's for sure. They need to upgrade their defense & goaltending. They'll always be able to attract UFA forwards. Players want to play with Sid. I expect Malkin & Letang to be resigned & probably Orpik. I'm not sure about the rest.

I don't think there's any way Harding has another full year in him. Backstrom needs support, and the Wild now have the D he can work with. It fell apart for the Wild when they tried to open up to match the Hawks.

Mike Smith will be pretty cheap, and that seems to be a prerequisite for Wang. That will be a solid choice too.

The Flyers need to get under the cap ceiling first.

Buying out Briere and Bryzgalov will get there.

Until they trade for Luongo.

They should just trade Bryzgalov for Luongo & a prospect or pick.
