Every rule has its loophole and Gallant and Barch have found it for this one.

From Rule 46.6:

Helmets - No player may remove his helmet prior to engaging in a fight. If he should do so, he shall be assessed a two minute minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Helmets that come off in the course of and resulting from the altercation will not result in a penalty to either player

Way to go Brett "The Hit Man" Gallant (Obvious nickname but it worked)! He use to do that all the time in junior. Before he'd fight a guy he'd ask to remove the helmet. He actually never lost a fight in junior.

I got drunk with him last month. I'm surprised that he's playing in an NHL pre-season game. He was a great fighter but a terrible skater and puck handler.

On a related note, I think Boone Jenner has earned himself a spot on the Jackets' roster. He had two goals, including the game winner, today against the Pens. What's more - He spent the majority of the game on a line with Gaborik and Dubinski. And he smoothly yanked a puck off Malkin's stick late in the game when Bobrovski had no idea where the puck was.

Well, to be <something> the NHL has been spending a lot of effort on stopping the menace of tucked jerseys. They just don't have the time to evaluate a rule that most fans will actually like.
