I am not crazy about WS home field advantage going to the team with the best record. I think it was best when it simply alternated. A better record in one league doesn't mean you are better than a team with a lesser record, but best overall in their league.

Something tells me signing a Japanese player is in a separate category since we have an agreement with that league.

I wonder if the international rules talked about only refer to amateur players.

The compensation change doesn’t go into effect until after the 2017 season, which means the Rangers would still get a draft pick if center fielder Ian Desmond signs elsewhere this winter. If the decision has any impact on the Rangers in the short term - and even this might be a stretch - it might make it a little more attractive for Desmond to sign a one-year deal with the Rangers and then re-enter free agency with nothing to suppress his market next year.
