Rangers near bottom in top-prospects listing | SportsDay

The publication Baseball America agrees with the view that the Texas Rangers recently have given up a lot of talent and currently are running low on star-quality players in their minor-league system.

BAM included only one Ranger in its annual ranking of the top 100 prospects: outfielder Leody Taveras, at No. 47 after his first season. Seven other clubs have one or no players in the top 100: Arizona, Baltimore, Detroit, Kansas City, the Los Angeles Angels, Miami and San Francisco.

The list includes three players whom the Rangers traded in the last 18 months: Milwaukee center fielder Lewis Brinson at No. 27; Philadelphia catcher Jorge Alfaro at No. 41 and Milwaukee right-hander Luis Ortiz at No. 79.

Brinson and Ortiz went to the Brewers in last year's trade for catcher Jonathan Lucroy. The Rangers included Alfaro in the 2015 deal for top-flight left-hander Cole Hamels.

In each case, the Rangers were pushing to win the World Series. Each season ended with a loss to Toronto in an American League Division Series.

Atlanta has the most players on the list, with eight. The New York Yankees are second, with seven. Pittsburgh first baseman Josh Bell, of Dallas Jesuit, is No. 35.

Rangers top prospects: Why Jose Trevino rapidly rose in organization's pecking order of catchers | SportsDay

5. Jose Trevino
Opening day age: 24

Bats-throws: R/R

Last year's stats: .303 avg., 9 HR, 68 RBI, .776 OPS, .998 fielding percentage in 100 games (he was named the top defensive catcher in the minors after having only two errors)

College: Oral Roberts

Hometown: Corpus Christi

Height-weight: 5-11, 195

Acquired: Selected by the Texas Rangers in the sixth round of the 2014 draft

Notable: In only his second full season as a catcher, Trevino rapidly rose in the organizational pecking order. He is athletic with good hands and moves well behind the plate, encouraging pitchers to bounce breaking pitches when ahead in the count. Impatient hitters will swing at those pitches.

Trevino's arm is accurate but average, at best. He makes up for that excellent footwork and a quick release. In the High-A California League last season, he threw out 47-of-98 runners attempting to steal.

As a hitter, Trevino makes consistent contact. He averaged a strikeout every 9.5 plate appearances last season. The drawback is that Trevino infrequently walks. He walked every 17.9 plate appearances last season.

BP top 101 prospect list has 4 Rangers

Yohander Mendez is the lone Ranger in the BP top 50, coming in at #39 on the list, just behind former Dodger and now Rays prospect Jose De Leon.

Ariel Jurado and Leody Taveras are back to back on the BP list, coming in at #72 and #73.

And while Mendez, Jurado and Taveras are the three Rangers prospects who are generally viewed as having a good shot at making top 100 lists, Texas snuck another one in on the BP list, with Anderson Tejeda snagging the #95 spot.

As a point of reference, former Ranger prospect Lewis Brinson is at #12 on the list, and Luis Ortiz, who went with Brinson to Milwaukee in the Jonathan Lucroy deal, is at #68. Jorge Alfaro is #33, and Nick Williams is #51.

Like to have some of these back. You can see why JD is so skedish on trades. Can't wait till the Fielder contract is off the books, but it will be awhile. Heard he has or will have a cooking show on Netflix.

Good point less Netflix.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but Fielder's cost is being compensated by insurance. So his hit to the bottom line isn't near as severe as Choo's or Elvis.

You're not. But I sincerely believe he was cast as the class clown and this wasn't of his own choosing. Hopefully he can find a real job and forget about his past Ranger assignment..........But Dave Raymond is going to make us miss Busby. And I was a HUGE detractor of the Busby camp.

Dude loves to eat

And it shows.

Aside from... you know, the sunk cost.

It is believed to be about half that is covered, but I am not sure how accurate that is. When Evan or someone tells us how much they are spending on payroll they include the whole $18 million for Prince.

Of the three give me Elvis as coming the closest to being worth what he is paid. At least Elvis stays healthy.

I like it. If health is kind to us, look out. Pitching is a little concerning but things can still improve.

Not sure the line up will remain like this but the ability to produce runs is definitely there. Rua and Maz could really make a difference if they have the year they're capable of. Just rambling and anxious.

Colby Lewis made it official. He's looking for a new home, but he wants to pitch again.

He thanked the team for all they've done for him, and you know, they/us feel the same.

Most certainly. He is a warrior and example to follow.
