So with the starting rotation they have, they aren't going to win anything anytime soon since they made no impact additions at the deadline. So why are they not selling guys like Cruz, Paxton, Seager ect? What's the plan?

Plan? This is the Seattle Mariners. When was the last time we had an actual plan?

More seriously, I honestly have no idea. Hence why I thought AZ put it well by pointing out we didn't improve the current roster substantially, and in the process thinned out an already thin farm system.

i wrote a longer post than this, and then deleted it.

in short, this team isn't ready to seriously contend, and jedi's insane flurry of trades reeks of desperation. he was taken advantage of, and that's remarkable because the july market was very weak for BOTH buyers and sellers.

it was going to take at least another 2 rounds of winter/july trades to get this team ready to wheel and deal for what it actually needs to contend for more than a desperation hope of making the playoffs like they have this year.

where the ever living fuck is pitching going to come from after this desperate stab at the playoffs ends next month?

Even adding a #3-4 would have been a huge boost. I don't believe Erasmo was the best they could do and he wasn't even starting. The best hope is Gallardo pitching like he has the last couple games and Felix being steady. They are still an arm short tho. I appreciate what Miranda has done but we are finding out he is a #5 in this league.
They will need to spend actual money on a starter this winter. Assuming Gallardo, Kuma and Smyly are gone, that leaves money to add a front end guy. I don't think the options are great but I think there are some guys with opt outs.

Miranda has been a nice #6 who became a #5 out of necessity. But I think he may be hitting the wall. He had a 10 strikeout game two starts ago but he has also given up 17 homeruns in his last 56 innings.

With Felix going on the DL and Verlander clearing waivers, perhaps the Mariners should look into that.

I just came to this thread to post the same exact thing.

What is the hold up here? Are we going for the playoffs or not JeDi?!?

So frustrating :gaah:

Apparently he had already been looking at SP options in the waiver market.

I highly doubt the Mariners will do it. If they weren't willing to trade a prospect and make the Tigers pay part of the contract I highly doubt they will take on all of it..I may be incorrect but isn't that how most waiver deals work. Usually a PTBNL or some 35 year old prospect and taking on the entire contract?

I have been eyeballing the SP situation for the upcoming off season and thinking about different options. IMO the overall depth of SP options during FA is thin but the M's must get involved even if they don't get one of the few top names I feel they can still improve the overall rotation by adding some better quality depth. One of the guys that I really want the M's to go after is lance Lynn.

Mariners at it again:

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto is at it again. Shortly after the team’s Yonder Alonso trade with the Athletics, Dipoto announced that Seattle has acquired right-hander Ryan Garton and catcher Mike Marjama from the Rays for two minor leaguers – left-hander Anthony Misiewicz and infielder Luis Rengifo – and a player to be named later. Garton and Marjama will report to Triple-A Tacoma, tweetsBob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune. To make room for their new additions, the Mariners designated catcher Tuffy Gosewisch for assignment.

Ryan Garten has a career 5.26 ERA in 44 major league appearances. An ERA of 8.71 in 7 major league appearances this year.

In his defense, he has been excellent in AAA this year with a 1.64 ERA in 33 IP with 46 Ks.

Mark Marjama might have some value as catching depth, he has yet to make an MLB appearance but is hitting .274/.342/.445 in AAA in 72 games with 9 HRs and 51 RBIs.

So getting more AAAA players? Eh, to me just more irrelevant trades, Jerry just trading to get his trading fix.

Marco Gonzales: 1 GS 11.25 ERA 4.0 IP 2.000 WHIP

Nice.

Nice.

Add in the other 10 SP's he acquired and it looks real pretty. The man knows not about SP's. Maybe that is why he was a reliever his whole career?

Here is a little more on these two if anyone cares.

I'll be honest, I'd still rather have Steve Cishek. Especially after David Phelps is experiencing "elbow discomfort"

Still haven't heard anything about how serious it is.

Garton, seems like good bullpen depth... key word "depth" probably not going to improve the bullpen. However with Phelps going down with an injury. An injury that I have a bad feeling about. Garton being added will help out of necessity more than anything. The other options on the 40 man have either tried and failed or are injured. Garton fits in nicely with the "Mariner mold" with his 5.62 major league ERA. We are basically looking at Dan Altavilla numbers, good in AAA then garbage fire in the majors.

Maybe Thyago Vieira gets a shot soon?
