Angels Agree To Terms With Kevin Maitan

He was one of those guys that the Braves lost.

Baseball America had him ranked #77
MLB.com had him ranked #32
Baseball Prospectus had him ranked #100

Didn't have a great year, but still a good prospect. Would've been nice if the Mariners could've landed him with their 2018-2019 bonus pool.

Livan Soto has signed with the Angels for a bonus of $850,000, per Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com.

Soto was one of the 13 prospects the Braves had to forfeit their rights to as punishment for violating MLB's international signing regulations. The biggest name of the bunch, Kevin Maitan, has also signed with the Angels. Soto, a 17-year-old shortstop from Valencia, Venezuela, spent the 2017 season with the Braves' affiliate in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

Looks like the current Angel's GM is doing what our former Angel's GM should be doing.

At first I thought you were saying that Kevin Maitan signed for $850,000. Didn't know they nabbed another one of them.

Ya I don't get this at all. Angels who have a better farm system add to it while we with an inferior system don't sign any of them...huh? And the money used is next years and not this years so it doesn't take away from Ohtani bid.

I know.

The only thing that will give me hope is Ohtani, and I'm starting to falsely get my hopes up. It's sort of like when you meet a 10/10 at the bar and she gives you her number and you think you have a shot.

Remind me not to get excited.

Don't get excited until she is actually in your bed....

I am actually really surprised Seattle didn't get some of those Braves guys.

The Ohtani stuff seems to be fairly promising at this point. He clearly seems to favor a west coast team, which looks good for us. I am definitely keeping my expectations in check though.

To be honest I'm not sure I understand how the Ohtani camp is handling the "meetings" with these teams. Are the meetings all in Japan? And teams are giving presentations? I think our chances are better if he has boots on the ground in Seattle.

They are all in Los Angeles. Kind of like speed dating from the sound of it. I heard JD already tried to trade Ohtani twice this week.

If the Angels land both those former Braves prospects, and Ohtani, I think I may just lose all hope in humanity.

Yeah no kidding...

This is going to get interesting quickly... I am very curious to see who makes the next cut and what the new news coming out of that purge is.

I think the way teams want to use him is a huge part of his decision and if hitting as a DH is what he wants or if he wants to play the field. I think a National league team actually makes a lot of sense for him.

While we were are waiting on Ohtani thing, I was looking up articles on international signings for M's and ran into this 2013 article and our signings for the year and the mess we had down in DR, Just shows how ucked up we are then and now in the international market which makes me wonder if it is even worth having that department? I would love to know how much we spend on that department and if we could use that money on players instead?

Uh oh!!!!

#Sources have indicated to me that #ohtani was blown away by the #padres presentation. We could expect a decision to be made by Friday.
Not surprised... Padres seemed like the dark horse. Read something few weeks ago, that made several good points as to why the Padres are actually the best fit for him. I would think he was surprised the Padres popped out at him. I'll try and find it.

Who knows what is going to happen

Dipoto also said Gamel would get more work at 1B. Did not want to fire him into games that counted last year but will in spring training.

DIpoto says reliever David Phelps' rehab has gone well and he's starting his throwing program this week. Guillermo Heredia is pain-free after shoulder surgery, optimistic he'll be ready for start of season.
