It's a go for next season and will be reevaluated following the 2014-15 season.

The West has a 7% better chance at making the playoffs. That's...quite a bit actually. We'll see how this goes. Welcome East Detroit and Columbus!

*Little bitter that now that I may be going back to the Pittsburgh area Columbus is in our division.

Don't like this.

I was always a big fan of the years when Pittsburgh played in the Northeast division against Boston, Buffalo, Montreal. I would have preferred they had reunited some of those division match-ups. Having said that, I realize this will help out Detroit and Columbus in many ways. Broadcast schedules will be made easier for their fans to watch. Still, if they are gonna blow it up, would have liked to see some more of the Canadian teams, plus Boston and Buffalo.

It's pretty close to the old Patrick division days really. Just added CBus and Carolina. Not too bad at all. Except that division will be a blood bath.

Important note: I think this is HUGE for Columbus. Their ratings will go through the roof IMO. Games in the EST consistently, potential rivalry with the Pens, the stars in the division, etc.

In an NHL memo obtained by TSN last week, the league proposed an Eastern Conference with 16 teams and a Western Conference with 14 teams.

A vote from the NHL Board of Governors is expected within a week to make the plan official.

The divisional re-alignment would be as follows:

Western Conference

Pacific Division: Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

Mid-West Division: Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg.

Eastern Conference

Central Division: Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Toronto.

Atlantic Division: Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, N.Y. Islanders, N.Y. Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington.

The top three teams in each division would make the playoffs, along with the four wild-card teams - the best two non-division winners in each conference.

my question is how many times does each team play each other

as a red wings fan, i don't give a crap about the uneven conferences. the fact that i don't have to watch games until 1am in the morning more than makes up for that. time for the wings to get the cakewalk travel schedule that most of the eastern conference teams have enjoyed for years

This is so goddam stupid.

Its just temporary. Think of this as notice that now we have some time to pool our money and form an ownership group.

Pretty much.

Pittsburgh and Columbus would have been great fits for that geographically speaking.

All four New York/New Jersey teams, the three Canadian teams and Detroit. Seems like the best fit to me.

Maybe it's just me but from top to bottom I really don't see much difference in the strength of the divisions. Esp if you look at the conference standings as of now. JMO.

Washington and Carolina have won that SE division more than Tampa or Florida. Now they get added to a already talented Atlantic. True, the standings as of right now show something else, but I don't doubt the Caps to be lesser opponents, and Carolina has the Staal Bros.

Much like Kenny pointed out, I see no sense in having the panthers and lightning in with a bunch of northeast teams.
