She's harmless. After all she's a Lion and Bruins fan. Animal fetish my guess.
Throwing the stigma of racism around isn't harmless. Robert Parish was my grandmother's favorite player. As a kid my very first favorite Red Sox player was Tommy Harper. We both just rooted for individuals and didn't evaluate a race. In my experience the same applies to most Boston fans. Anyone remember Pedro (no last name needed)?.

Larry Bird may have been white but he was brought to Boston by a man who placed the first all black starting five in the NBA, then hired the first black coach. He was brought to Boston because he could flat out play and was an absolute draft steal... Not because he was a great white hope.

I lived in Boston until 10years old.
I knew nothing of racism and didn't even notice that some Red Sox players were black.

So you were under the assumption that Boston wasn't racist? Go to Beacon Hill, Charleston, Boston is pretty well known for being racist. People may choose to ignore it, but it's very much alive and prospering in Boston

Papi is loved in Boston

Damned straight. My 10 year old has chosen #34 for his jersey number after I showed him all the old videos of Papi at the plate. I'm trying to teach my kid to make that angry Papi face when he steps to the plate and looks at the pitcher.

That said, I'm likely in the minority but Manny Being Manny may be my all time favorite RedSox.

No such assuption. I had no knowledge of racism as a child. I'm not saying it wasn't there.

Funny, when I was a kid growing up in MA I would say my dad was racist as fuck. Then in my late teens we moved to the Caribbean for a while and all my dads best friends were all black. It was a total shift in psychology.

Haha. But nah. He genuinely loved his Caribbean friends.

Native Caribbean folks are very conservative in their nature, polite, and love to kick back and have a good time. It's easy to like them.

Growing up in Somerville the black kids were dressed better and were better in sports.
In my neighborhood they were the stars.
This was the middle of the 60's.

Not in Taunton where I grew up. The majority of the black kids at school were from the projects with a few rare exceptions.

It's totally different now but the projects are still there.

Salem.
'70's.
There was everything.
I had a couple of black friends that were "African American" even though that was not a term back then. Another black friend from Haiti, had the accent and everything. He said he was a different kind of black, but even he didn't know what that meant. An Asian kid. A couple of Jewish kids and a couple of Irish kids. I didn't know what being Jewish meant and they couldn't explain it.

And none of us cared.

Until I moved to Vermont and got isolated from everyone that wasn't creamy white.

When was the last time you were in Boston?

Sure in the 70s/80s CharlestoWn not Charleston was 100% white, so was Southie mainly white Irish Catholics. Just the opposite in Jamica Plain and Roxbury as well as others. Those towns were almost 100% black. Without getting into a history lesson then came things like bussing and the south east Asian refugees... Afluent people from all over the world started sending their kids to Boston for higher education. Those isolated pockets of white or black neighborhoods are all but gone. Hell even the north end isn't 100% WOP any more. There are many other areas around the country that can't say the same both white or black dominated. Boston is now and has been for a while, a true melting pot. Shit Slummerville in the 70s/80s is now a destination where finding a 100 year old home on a postage stamp lot will cost you near a cool 1 million. Am I right or am I right @Carnzo?

That's selectively stirring the pot by grabbing small groups that are very inclusive. Racism is alive and well EVRYWHERE especially within inclusive groups. Just because the loud guy next to me is a racist doesn't spread the stink on to me (or the majority of us).

How could it not be selective? We are talking about one city and areas within that city. Those areas are in Boston and therefore a representative of Boston. And people can choose to believe what they want, but Boston is known for being racist as far as I am concerned that is beyond contestation. What anyone remembers from their childhood isn't really applicable, at those ages we are mostly oblivious.

That's complete bullshit. Is Boston known as spearheading the abolitionist movement in the 1840's and 50's? No, it's known for what a few loud mouths say and do. I'll repeat what I already stated... Racism is still everywhere and attaching it to Boston is categorically unfair.
