#2 ranked UMn men's hockey just swept #3 ranked Michigan, 5-2 last night, and 6-3 tonight.

That's FIVE wins over Top Ten ranked teams so far this season, Top 10 at the time of the games. OSU and North Dakota have since dropped to #12 and #19. 4 wins over teams that will probably still be Top Ten come next week, unless OSU moves back into the Top Ten?

2-0 vs #3 Michigan. Mich might not drop too far since most voters will probably know they were missing several players this weekend.
1-1 vs #6 Penn St.
1-1 vs #8 Mankato
1-1 vs #12 OSU
1-1 vs #19 UND
2-0 vs #20 NDm

10-4 overall. only 2 of their 14 games vs an unranked team.

Only 4 games left on the entire schedule vs an unranked team as both Ariz St and SCSU, UMn's remaining ooc opponents are ranked Top 25, SCSU #4 and ASU #22.
This is all well and good ....but.... there are only 62 schools playing D1 hockey. 25 of 62 equates to 40.32 % or 53 out of 131. Beating a "top 53 school" in football isn't something to brag about. Plus, no one cares about "game ranking" only final rankings.

UND hockey has been better. 8 titles. How many for the gophers?
7 tournament Titles, 2003, 2002, 1979, 1976, 1974, 1940 & 1929 or 1933 & several #1 EOS poll rankings/Natl Titles in 1923, 24, 25, 26, 29, 33 & 1940.

UMn's sent more to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
UMn's sent WAY more to the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
UMn's sent more to the US Olympic team & it's not really close.
UMn's had more win Olympic Medals for the US and it's ridiculously not close.
UMn's had WAY more win Olympic GOLD Medals for the US and the gap is so wide is embarrassing.

UMn's got BOTH the 1980 Miracle on Ice and the original miracle in 1960 on their resume, providing the leading scorers and the goalie in 1960, and half the team and the coach in 1980.
While UMn was helping the US win Olympic Hockey Medals, UND was taking advantage winning one of their titles in 1980, an olympic year, finishing 2nd in 68, & getting to the Frozen Four in 84.

UMn's sent more to the NHL.
UMn's had more score more in the NHL.
UMn's won more NCAA Tournament games.
UMn's been to more NCAA tournaments.
UMn's been to more Frozen Fours in the last 50 years.
UMn's been to the same # of Frozen Fours all-time.
UMn's won 14 more games than UND in the head to head series.

UMn was dominating college hockey for decades before UNDers learned how to skate apparently. Finishing #1 in the polls several times while UND was struggling to figure out how to win more games than it lost.
UND needed a former Gopher to help coach them to some of their Titles, UMn never needed diddly from UND.
UMn made college hockey and US hockey what it is today. UND just helped old washed up Canadians get free college educations.

And at least 21 different hockey programs have won Natl Titles, that's over 33%.

Compare that to around 19 different football programs winning Recognized Natl Titles since the NCAA Hockey tourney started in 1948. That's only 1 out of 7 approx.

So 6 out of every 7 of those 131 schools have never won a Natl Title and NEVER WILL. Most won't even come close. The majority won't ever sniff the Top 25 rankings.

7 of the Titles won in college hockey in the 21st Century were won by programs that had not won a title in the 20th Century.

Thing is, the NHL regularly snatches players out of the college game after just one or two seasons, when that rarely happens in cfb. Players leaving after their soph season is very very rare, and it's even rare for them to go pro after their junior season as well, where as it's common for a college hockey player to leave after their soph season if they are really good and a player is most likely aware that they are not going pro if they play their senior season as a college player.

This fact allows the non-blue blood hockey programs a much better chance to succeed in the NCAA tourney. Maybe if the tourney was only 4 teams like it started out in 1948 and like FBS cfb has just recently moved to, the blue blood programs would do better year in and year out. And now that the FBS is expanding to a 12 team playoff, the long time blue bloods may not continue winning every year? The transfer portal and NIL may contribute to this as well, or those may prevent it from happening. They may help the Gopher hockey program do better going forward?

An example is one year recently, UMD beat out the Gophers to get into the NCAA tourney by a fraction of a percent and UMD went on to win the Natl Title that season. That would NEVER happen in the FBS, teams getting seeded #4 in the current cfp almost always are big underdogs.

And maybe you should look at who the teams are that are ranked #19 & #20 in the hockey rankings, NORTH DAKOTA and NOTRE DAME, and compare them to the teams ranked #45-#48 in cfb, 6-4 East Carolina, 6-5 SMU, South Alabama, James Madison??? Give me a break, there is no comparison, NoDak has the 3rd most Natl Titles and Notre Dame's been in several Title games, RECENTLY. ECU, S Alab, JMad, have any of those 3 ever finished ranked in the Top 25 even? SMU won a title back in the 1930s and got hit with the death penalty and have sucked every since, basically.

So yes, no one thinks highly of a team for beating S Alab, or ECU or SMU, although NCSU only beat ECU by 1 pt, and Cincy only beat them by 2. But that's not the case in college hockey, beating #19 UND is highly regarded and sweeping Notre Dame is part of why they dropped to #20. Not sure why NDm is ranked so low, 4 of their losses are to teams ranked #1, #2 & #3. Their other loss was to #14 WMU. They beat #3 Michigan and got a win and a tie vs #17 MSU. And UND's losses are two losses to #1 Denver, 1 loss to #2 Minnesota, 1 loss to #6 Quinipiac and 1 loss to #22 ASU. They also got a win vs #2 UMn, a tie vs #6 Quinipiac, so both UND and NDm are probably underrated right now.

Take it to the hockey bord, chump.
No one is forcing you to come into this thread, are they?

Oregon, if the B1G takes the low IQ school, will be playing B1G Hockey and getting trounced by the Gophers in that sport, too. lol

3-1 vs Oregon in cfb.
6-3 vs Oregon in cbb.
Can't find the head to head record in baseball, but UMn with 3 times more titles than Oregon has CWS appearances tells me UMn's probably got a similar advantage over Oregon in this sport, too.

If UMn wins a non-hockey major league sport college Natl Title, it would be in basketball most likely. Can't see it happening in Baseball with how the sport has been changed to so favor southern programs, unless the next Dave Winfield/Paul Molitor like pair end up on the same team instead of a couple seasons apart, which I don't see happening.

I doubt I'll ever see UMn win a Natl Title in cfb. Fleck either won't be able to improve his recruiting enough to overcome the talent difference between UMn and the likes of OSU/Mich, or his lack of expert coaching prowess will find them losing a semi or title game to a team with a better coach.

Hockey? UMn could win a couple more men's titles with the first of those titles possibly coming this season?

The Women are ranked #1 right now and have a senior laden team, so they should win their 8th title this year, but OSU won't lay down and give it to them, and #3 Wisconsin? Well, UMn and UW play tomorrow and Sunday so we'll know more soon enough. My guess is UW will also prove very capable of winning another Title. The biggest surprise would be a non-WCHA team winning one.

Only 4 games left on the entire schedule vs an unranked team as both Ariz St and SCSU, UMn's remaining ooc opponents are ranked Top 25, SCSU #4 and ASU #22.

49-7 vs Colorado.
34-7 vs Mich St.
31-0 vs Rutgers.
31-3 vs NW.

Not even #2 ranked OSU can match that. Close, but no. 119-36 vs 96-10. OSU scored more overall vs those 3 teams, but they allowed 3.5 times more points to be scored on them. 83 point scoring margin for #2 ranked OSU compared to an 86 point scoring margin for UR Minnesota.

86 > 83.

#4 TCU beat Colorado 38-13.

49-7 > 38-13.

#3 Michigan beat MSU 29-7.

34-7 > 29-7.

#2 Ohio St beat NW 21-7.

31-3 > 21-7.

That's 3 of the Top 4 teams in the country that can't match what UMn did vs those 3 teams.

#7 USC beat Colorado 55-17.

49-7 > 55-17. Not by much, but it is.

#11 PSU beat NW 17-7.

31-3 > 17-7. Huge difference. Maybe if the Refs didn't want PSU to win the game vs UMn? PSU came close to losing to Purdue as well.

#12 Oregon beat Colorado 49-10.

49-7 > 49-10. Not by much, but it is.

#16 UCLA beat Colorado 45-17.

49-7 > 45-17.

#17 Washington beat MSU 39-28.

34-7 > 39-28. Huge difference. That 11 pt HOME win boosted UDub into the rankings and even a loss to 3-7 Ariz St hasn't knocked them out???

#23 Oregon St beat Colorado 42-9.

49-7 > 42-9. Not by much, but it is.

#1 FCS SDSU beat WIU 34-10.

62-10 > 34-10.

#4 FCS NDSU beat WIU 56-17.

62-10 > 56-17.

Mizzou and Liberty play NMSU, 3-0 in their last 3 games in the next 2 games, we'll see how UMn's 38-0 win over NMSU compares.

UMn compares favorably in common opponent comparisons with teams ranked #2, #3, #4, #7, #11, #12, #16, #17, #23 in FBS & #1 and #4 in the FCS.

Hoping I can add a big win over Iowa to this list of comparisons tomorrow, it's a possibility. More nervous about this game than any other we've played this year. Iowa's had UMn's number for awhile now and just not sure how UMn's not so stellar offense will perform vs Iowa's stellar defense? Iowa's offense may suck, but their defense could score some points and could be the difference if UMn can't get their offense working? But with Mo in the game, I think UMn has the advantage.

All this long winded bullshit. You ain't right. Three homeristic comments.

I'll ask again. What has Minnesota football done lately that makes them relevant right now?

What has Minnesota hoops done lately to be relevant right now?

What has Minnesota hockey done lately to be relevant right now?

When it comes to the Gophers you only have two things. 1- to talk about the past a lot & 2- bring up the most dumbest shit to validate Minnesota sports.

You are simple incapable of being a rational fan.

Um, I said "Losers? In the past 16 seasons, my team (UF) has won a National Championships in Baseball, two National Championships in basketball, and two National Championships in Football (not to mention a Heisman Trophy). What has Minnesota done over that span?"

That span is 2006-2021 (not 1997 to 2021).
What are you so butt hurt about? I've never once ripped on UF as a school or as an Athletics Program, either. If I have, it was something minor and TRUE. No one is perfect, and no university is perfect, and no sports program is perfect, either. So if you are remembering something negative I said about UF in the past, get over it for fucks sake, holy sh1t dude.

I have high respect for UF. Not the highest, but close.

I don't remember ever criticizing UF about anything? But maybe I have? I mean this years UF fb team is what? 6-4? I ripped on Utah for losing to UF, because UF was not thought to be a contender this year, but Utah was. That's just a simple fact. Should I be more impressed with the 3 pt win over USF than I am? Maybe the 10 pt loss to 6-4 UK? Maybe the 7 pt win over 4-6 Mizzou? I'm NOT saying UF sucks, they don't. They've played a tough schedule, they rank slightly better than the Gophers, but that's mostly because of beating an overrated Utah, while UMn's total throttling of MSU is being underrated. MSU's played OSU, Mich, Wash, Illinois, Maryland, Wisconsin & of course, Minnesota and yet seems bound to qualify for a bowl game.

Has UF EVER not finished in the Top Ten of the Sears Directors Cup?

Didn't UF crack 1 Billion in Research recently?

Hasn't UF produced more Nobel Prize winners than any other SEC school?

Hasn't UF won Natl Titles in almost every sport program they have? 8 men's sports and 8 women's sports titles?

That's awesome!!

So not sure how you got the idea I was bashing your school or team and needed to confront me? Lighten up Francis, lol.

All this long winded bullshit. You ain't right. Three homeristic comments.
Bored. Crappy weather outside.

I'll ask again. What has Minnesota football done lately that makes them relevant right now?

11-2 in Fleck's 3rd season. Prevented PSU from getting a CFP invite.

#13 in the nation in the number of draftees produced the last 3 NFL drafts. He should send a few more to the NFL in the 2023 draft.

Been a contender to win the West Division each of the last 3 non-covid seasons. Tied for the title in 2019 & probably will again in 2022.

Top Ten ranked defense last 2 seasons. Only team with 2 shutouts of FBS teams this season.

Asst coach, DC Rossi, is up for the Broyles Award.

Offensive line is up for the Joe Moore Award,

Center is the top rated center in P5 according to PFF & is up for the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award and of course First team All-American and the Rimington, obviously. If he wins the Outland, only 3 schools in the nation will have more Outland winners than UMn.

Mo Ibrahim has the longest 100 yard game streak, 18, since 2000. He's one of 6 B1G players in 127 years with 50 tds. He could get to 60?

He and his backup Potts are up for the Comeback Player of the year Award.

His 18 rushing tds leads the nation despite playing 1-2 fewer games than most everyone else chasing that title.

Mo's 140 yard rushing per game avg is ranked 3rd in the nation behind only a UAB rb and Illinois' rb.

With big enough games vs Iowa and Wisconsin and he always has his biggest games in bowl games, so he may end up back in the Heisman discussion? UMn's worst loss being the game he missed will help his resume as it shows how impactful he is.

If not the Heisman, then First team All-american RB, and the Doak Walker Award maybe?

Morgan's up for both the Wuerffel Trophy and the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the year Award.

Axel Ruschmeyer is up for the Burlsworth Trophy.

Nubin could end up with some post season accolades? Trickett as well.

What has Minnesota hoops done lately to be relevant right now?

New coach in just his 2nd season has built up a team loaded with young talent with a Top 15-30 ranked recruit committed to coming next season. Combine that recruits arrival next year with the return of two injured juniors and a red shirted frosh hopefully being ready to play with everyone playing significant minutes this season returning next year and I have predicted they'll be Sweet 16 worthy next year with only one senior on next year's team so they could be even better in 2024-25.

This young coach is seemingly a talented coach, he's exciting the local bb community and fans with the quality of players he's bringing into the program. He's a home grown product and former Gopher which the local bb community seems to prefer/like, and he's black, so he won't ever need to be fired for being a racist or to satisfy some weird kind of affirmative action kind of thing.

The outlook for the women's team is even better.

What has Minnesota hockey done lately to be relevant right now?

Trip to Frozen Four just last spring in Coach Motzko's 4th season.

Arguably the #1 ranked recruiting class coming in for his 5th season.

UMn's the 2nd youngest team in the country.

Several more NHL first round picks committed to play for UMn starting either next year or the year after.

6-1 in last 7 hockey games.

4-2 win over #12 Ohio State,
4-1 win over #20 Notre Dame,
3-0 win over #20 Notre Dame,
2-4 loss to #6 Penn State,
3-1 win over #6 Penn State,

And...

5-2 win over #3 Michigan Thursday night,
6-3 win over #3 Michigan Friday night.

Denver doesn't play this weekend but what UMn did to the #3 ranked team team in the country should garner them a share of first place votes.

It puts them in the driver's seat in the B1G conf standings, a conf with 3 of the top 6 ranked teams in the country and 6 of the 7 teams currently ranked top 20.

My guess is teams will beat up on each other so one of the 6 will eventually drop out. But the B1G is easily the best conference right now and UMn has a commanding lead in the conf with the top 3 opponents already played.

4 games vs last place Wisc lie ahead and 4 vs #17 Mich St, and only 6 total left vs #3 Mich/#6 PSU/#12 OSU. So this bodes well towards UMn remaining in 1st, especially as their 2nd youngest lineup in the nation adapts to playing college level hockey.

If the NHL doesn't rob too many of these young hotshots too early, this could be the beginning of another mini/semi-dynasty for UMn?

Seems you want to try to exclude UMn's best sports decade?

but that's fine.

UMn's women's hockey DYNASTY with 4 titles and a runner-up from 2012-2017. 4 titles, 7 title game apps, 10 frozen fours & 14 NCAA tournament apps since 2006.

UMn's Dance program with 15 of it's 19 total Natl Titles since 2006.

Men's wrestling 1 title & 3 runners up & 11 total top 8 finishes since 2006.

Men's wrestling SIX hwt Natl Titles since 2006. Even more of a Hwt U in your limited time frame.

UMn with NINE Diving Natl Titles & 6 runner up finishes & 37 top 12s since 2010,
making it Dive U.

Men's hockey 3 frozen fours with a runner up finish since 2006.

Top rated recruiting class took the ice this season, are 6-1 in last 7 games, vs #3, #3, #6, #6, #12, #20 & #20. Highly rated recruiting class coming in next year as well and possibly the year after that, too? Close to double digit First round NHL draft picks could end up on the same team if none leave before their 3rd season. 22 draft picks combined were on the combined rosters of #2 UMn & #3 Michigan for last night's game.

Men's gymnastics a runner up finish and top 8 finishes every year since 2007. 9th in 2006.

Vb team 4 final fours, 3 elite 8 trips, 5 sweet 16 trips and a total of 15 NCAA tournament apps in 16 years. Only missed tournament was the year before back to back ff runs.

UMn is Back2Back U. ;)

Men's golf a 3rd place finish and a 9th place finish since 2006.

5 straight bowl games won in a row. New outdoor stadium built and opened in 2009, construction started in, wait for it... 2006, lol.

New hotshot coach brought in, new state of the art practice facility built, #13 in the nation at drafted players last 3 NFL drafts, top ten defense last 2 seasons.

Womens CC 16 NCAA tournament apps in 17 seasons since 2006 including a #5 finish in 2021.

Womens Gymnastics with 3 top 8 finishes including back to back top 8 finishes the last 2 seasons with a 6th place finish last season.

Wsbb brought in a Top ten ranked recruiting class this season.

Msbb is bringing in a Top 15-30 ranked recruit next year.

UMn's Baseball coach, a former Gopher, is moving up the Top 25 college baseball coaches winningest coaches all-time list. Haven't heard anything about his retirement yet. He got the program a new stadium recently.

UMn's Baseball program has increased their conf record longest streak of having a player drafted extended to 35 straight drafts in a row. The 2nd longest streak among B1G programs is 11.

UMn's women's golf program has a hotshot frosh on the team who has already won a few tournaments, could help raise the profile of the program?

I may have missed a few teams? Soccer and tennis and track and field, tiddlywinks and underwater basket weaving and of course the curling team.

And Oregon is?

Losing 49-3, is that relevant?

Going 1-4 since becoming the most overrated team in cfb history??? Maybe?

I mean #3? Lmmfgdao!!!

And how does Uncle Phil's Nike mascots respond to getting ranked #3 in the nation?

...?

By going 1-3 to finish the season and none of those 3 losses were even close, they were all pummelings.

And then starting this season by losing 49-3.

Oregon had to pay a Gopher 5th stringer back up to fill their RB slot, lol.

And UC-Irvine?

And how does Uncle Phil's Nike mascots respond to getting ranked #3 in the nation?

...?

By going 1-3 to finish the season and none of those 3 losses were even close, they were all pummelings.

And then starting this season by losing 49-3.

Oregon had to pay a Gopher 5th stringer back up to fill their RB slot, lol.

And UC-Irvine?

Oregon has won 3 rose bowls the past dozen years.

When was the last Rose Bowl Minnesota won?

This is all well and good ....but.... there are only 62 schools playing D1 hockey. 25 of 62 equates to 40.32 % or 53 out of 131. Beating a "top 53 school" in football isn't something to brag about. Plus, no one cares about "game ranking" only final rankings.

Florida should just get talking to Georgia Tech and the two should join the B1G.

Nothing says UF couldn't still play ooc games regularly against FSU & Miami. Could do an every other year kind of thing?

UF is so much more than just a football school. Despite getting embarrassed by Vandy right now, ;)

Winning a national title a hundred years ago doesn't make you relevant today.
Never said it did.

And 1960 isn't exactly a hundred years.
1941 or 1940 or 1936 or 1935 or 1934 would be 100 years, either.

Don't have math there in Oregon? Wouldn't surprise me, the low IQ state that Oregon is.

Championships from 62 years ago also doesn't make you relevant today.

This thread is titled "Minnesota rules the world of football"...why is it that someone is only talking about sports other than football?

UMn being ranked #1 & #2 in Women's & Men's Hockey doesn't make Minnesota Football relevant, either. But it's still awesome for UMn.

UMn having 7 Natl Titles in football in the past doesn't make it's football team relevant today, either. But it's still better than being a NEVER BEEN like Oregon who hasn't won a single Natl Title in it's entire history.

UMn being 3-1 vs Oregon in cfb in the head to head doesn't make UMn fb relevant today, either. But it always brings a smile to my face when I think about it. lol

Oregon going 1-4 in their 5 games following their win over WSU last season doesn't make UMn football relevant today, either. But it also cracks me up when I think about it, and how Oregon was hilariously SO vastly overrated at #3 after the win over WSU, as if the loss to Stanford never happened or something?

And the losing margins of those 4 losses are historic. Has a #3 ranked team EVER lost by such a large margin before? lol I'm sure they have, but how often? And that 49-3 pummeling to start off the season? What was Oregon ranked at the time? Top 10 I am sure. Another historically bad loss for a Top Ten ranked team. Hey, at least Oregon's making some history.

UMn being a leader in the civil rights movement doesn't make it's football team relevant today, either. But it's far cooler than being a soul sold simp to a child slave labor kingpin like Oregon is.

UMn being a relevant school in the world throughout it's history doesn't make it's football team relevant, either. But it's still good for everyone, even if they don't realize or acknowledge it.
