New York has been planning this for a few years now since some of their best were retiring/moving on. (Cano etc.) They had the ability to scout out young top players to put together an up and coming #1 team where as the Mariners depended on "older" players for a quick fix. The M's philosophy is long term pain for MAYBE short term gain. Not the way to go and probably won't work anyway.
I don't think it was a plan, but an adjustment made by M's because they have ZERO ability to draft. But your point is dead on.
