Are there any Dallas fans who like this trade?

Probably any who look at it as the "win now" move that it is.

Definitely a risky move though because if they don't win and the Lakers become contenders again...this trade is going to look really bad.

Kareem is definitely one of the 3 players that have any reasonable case for GOAT

Out of curiosity, who are your other two?

Arguably one of the strongest planks in Abdul-Jabbar's case -- apart from the fact that he was the best high-school player ever and the best college player ever -- is that his unprecedented accomplishments came despite being actively hated by the leagues in which he played. Younger folks today cannot imagine this, but the NBA __hated__ Abdul-Jabbar, largely because of his religion, but also his willingness to speak his mind. He and a couple other athletes invented the concept of sports social protest when they boycotted the '68 Olympics. A lot of people in this country never forgave him for that. ( cf: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar details passing on 1968 Olympics in new book )

He got no calls at all on the court. He averaged 6 free throw attempts per game. By way of comparison, Pau Gasol averaged 5.1. One of these guys was one of the two most-unstoppable offensive weapons in the history of the game. The other was Gasol. Why do you think he developed the Skyhook? He needed to score from some distance, because when he went to the rim, he got clobbered every time. He wore the goggles because people 'accidentally' couldn't keep their fingers out of his eyes, which was the only way to stop him. Chamberlain averaged 11 FTA, and the league didn't exactly love him, either.

It was almost completely the antithesis of how Jordan was treated.

When Abdul-Jabbar's house burned down in '82-ish, and he lost his prized jazz collection, thousands of people sent him replacements. He was shocked, because as far as he was aware, everyone hated him.

That's not a 1 year rental because AD was always going to sign the extension with the Lakers.

No, he did not, and he talked with other teams in December ( goofy offseason due to Covid ) before signing with the Lakers.

A rental is bringing in a guy with one year left on his deal knowing you're unlikely to re-sign him, but he fills a need.
There's no difference. If you sign him as a UFA or not, you rented him for one season.

Pretty ironic he got dealt to Dallas.... Remember last offseason when there were rumors Klay would come to Los Angeles to be the designated shooter Bron and AD needed on the perimeter.

Well, AD has his designated shooter....in Dallas.

This just seems like such an awful trade for the NBA. Like the Ravens trading Lamar Jackson. Brutal blow to a fanbase

You're wrong. Whether or not he talked to other teams...he was always signing with the Lakers...going to the Lakers is why he forced his way out of New Orleans. Him saying he would only sign with the Lakers is why the Celtics (and any other team that could beat the Lakers offer) didn't improve their offer when they could have easily beaten the Lakers best offer.
There's no difference. If you sign him as a UFA or not, you rented him for one season.

No one has said otherwise. Whether traded for or signed to a 1 year "make good" deal...it's still bringing in a guy who fills a need knowing that you are unlikely to bring him back.

You seem like someone who argues just to argue.

You won't last long with that shit.

How so? AD improves the Mavs and if they make the right moves, Luka improves the Lakers.

But, you weren't returning as presently constructed.

Better equipped to possibly win now. Especially, if you add a good 3 and D player.
Luka alone gives you a shot for 10 years

That's a good comparison.

They would burn down half of Baltimore.

And no one could tell.

Luka should have been untradable is what I'm saying.

Maybe. Probably. The problem was, they were unlikely to get out of the West as constructed.

The better trade for the Mavs would have been to send Kyrie to the Lakers, but the Lakers and Mavs had been down that road with the Mavs previous inquiries about AD and the Lakers were clear every time...No Luka...No AD.

Having said that...if I were the Mavs GM...I'm trying to move Kyrie, not Luka.

They were also saying that there were some serious concerns about Luka's commitment to fitness. Luka is going to want a max deal, but the Mavs didn't want to risk it with his lack of commitment to staying in shape.

It reminds me of when the Lakers traded Shaq. The Lakers didn't want to pay him a max deal because he wouldn't stay in shape in the off-season and as he was getting older, it was getting harder and harder for him to "play himself into shape", he wouldn't make that commitment...so they traded him.
