Mariners acquired INF Abraham Toro and RHP Joe Smith from the Astros for RHP Kendall Graveman and RHP Rafael Montero.

Toro is the big get for Seattle in this somewhat controversial swap. He has mostly struggled in his time at the MLB level, but the 24-year-old does have impressive numbers in the upper minors and might be the third baseman of the future for the Mariners. Unless, of course, hyper-active general manager Jerry Dipoto looks to flip him in a subsequent trade.

Weird trade coming from a team in playoff contention, but I think it's a good one for the Mariners. I don't think the Mariners' winning ways are very sustainable.

Reds acquired LHP Luis Cessa and LHP Justin Wilson from the Yankees for a player to be named later.

The news was announced by the Yankees' official Twitter account late Tuesday night. Cessa has posted a strong 2.82 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings this season and will give the Reds a nice upgrade in mid-to-long relief.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Yankees inquired about a Max Scherzer trade "but were told they're not on his list."

Based on a number of recent reports, it sounds like Scherzer is dead-set on joining one of the contending teams on the West Coast, specifically the Dodgers, Giants, or Padres. And he has a lot of power in choosing his destination because of MLB's 10-and-5 rights. The belief around the industry is that a blockbuster deal could get done before the end of the night on Wednesday. Stay tuned.

good getting better :suds:

According to Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Astros are acquiring reliever Yimi Garcia from the Marlins.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network confirms that an agreement is in place, with the Astros sending OF Bryan De La Cruz to the Marlins in return. Houston already added one high-leverage reliever on Tuesday, snagging Kendall Graveman from the Mariners as part of a four-player swap, and will now further bolster that area of the roster by bringing in Garcia. The 30-year-old impending free agent right-hander has recorded 15 saves this season for Miami with an overall 3.47 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 35/13 K/BB ratio in 36 1/3 innings.

Atheltics acquired OF Starling Marte and cash considerations from the Marlins for LHP Jesus Luzardo.

The agreement was first reported by Craig Mish of SportsGrid and has now officially been announced by both clubs. Giving up Luzardo must have been a tough call for the A's, but they have significantly improved their offense (and defense) as they look to chase down the Astros in the American League West. Marte, a 32-year-old impending free agent, was slashing .306/.407/.453 with seven home runs and 22 stolen bases through 63 games this season for Miami. The cash considerations will cover the large majority of his remaining salay for 2021.

Brewers acquired INF Eduardo Escobar from the Brewers in exchange for INF Alberto Ciprian and OF Cooper Hummel.

The 32-year-old All-Star will provide an immediate boost to the Brewers lineup. Escobar is currently batting .246 with 22 home runs, 65 RBI, and 50 runs scored over 370 at-bats and has the seventh most RBI in the majors since 2019 (203). It remains to be seen where Milwaukee will place the infielder every day, as Escobar has played mostly third base this season in Arizona.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that the White Sox are finalizing a trade for Indians second baseman Cesar Hernandez.

After being connected to Adam Fraizer and Eduardo Escobar, the White Sox have finally found the infield help that they were seeking. Hernandez has already reached a career-high in homers this year with 18 in 96 games. He's usually a sound on-base guy, too, but the OBP this season sits at just .307. Bob Nightengale of USA Today hears that Cleveland will be getting RHP Konnor Pilkington in return.

Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post reports that the Nationals are trading Brad Hand to the Blue Jays.

And so the sell-off begins in Washington. Hand has been a little more hittable this season with the Nationals than he was during his great run with the Indians, but he still holds a decent 3.59 ERA, 1.148 WHIP, and 42/18 K/BB ratio in 42 2/3 total innings to go along with 21 saves. He represents a much-needed upgrade for the Jays' late-inning relief mix. Bob Nightengale of USA Today hears that catcher Riley Adams is the return for the Nats.

White Sox acquired RHP Ryan Tepera from the Cubs for LHP Bailey Horn.

News of the agreement just broke and the two clubs made it official moments later. Tepera has been terrific this season on the North Side of Chicago, boasting a 2.91 ERA, 0.785 WHIP, and 50/12 K/BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings, and will give White Sox manager Tony La Russa another reliable high-leverage bullpen option for the stretch run. The 33-year-old right-hander is due to hit free agency this winter.

not so fast :suds:

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that multiple teams are still trying to trade for Max Scherzer.

Earlier Thursday, it was reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that the Padres were close to a deal for Scherzer. Heyman notes that those talks between San Diego and the Nationals have intensified, but a source tells him that "multiple" teams that still have a chance; mentioning the Dodgers and perhaps the Giants and Red Sox. Stay tuned. Scherzer is assuredly going to be dealt, but it just might not be to the Padres.
