First - how many times has it happened? Once or twice?

The Red Sox absolutely lowballed Lester - so much that they (Lester & Agent) didn't even bother to offer a counter proposal. So, yes. Lester is a bit pissed at Boston...

Lester said way back that he would be willing to take a hometown discount. That was well before this season happened.

He will be a FA and will get numerous offers. What Boston will bid will be well below what he feels is a fair hometown discount. In fact, they willl be just another team... Boston will need to make a fair offer for multiple years at big bucks - which is something they are terribly afraid to do (especially for starting pitchers on the wrong side of 30).

All this said - I would love to see him back.

I think too much is being made about the offer to Lester.

That he was traded and in all likelihood won't be in Boston next year has a lot more to do with their unwillingness to throw big money at 30+ pitchers.

No one from Boston listens to anything that idiot says. I would advise anyone else to ignore it, too...

Chase Utley an Athletic before this is over?

why stop now ? We both know Beane is gonna find out just what it takes to get Utley and see if he can screw the Phils as bad as he did the Sox. I doubt they're as dumb in Philly as Boston. Probably gonna take a little more than what happened in the Lester deal to get Utley

:noidea:

I can see the logic that Oakland "won" this trade because it makes them a better team and puts them one step closer to potentially winning it all but I'm just not sure how you can really justify the insinuation that the Sox were fleeced.

well I am a lifelong Yanks fan although my allegiance to them is waning. I could not be more disgusted with the Yankees organization these days. Back to your point , no I do not like the Red Sox no matter what team I like. I have to admit I am truly shocked at how badly they were beat in this deal and I've enjoyed watching them fuck this up all the while sensing it was going to happen. Still I didn't think they would take this kinda bath

There is no conceivable argument the Red Sox got fleeced. The fact that the A's are getting a great pitcher for a stretch run, and the Red Sox are getting a good hitter for 1 years + 2 months. It's almost impossible the Red Sox get less, in terms of WAR, out of this deal.

If Oakland wins a WS the. The A's got what they wanted.

But yes, great move by Boston. Both guys are BoSox next season.

BB working it. Don't underestimate this move by Oakland.

Looks like a great trade for both (especially if Oakland can win the WS). For Oakland I love the "win it now" philosophy. The fans must be pleased.

If you read what I wrote all day yesterday on the other 2 threads and what I've written here you would have the answer to your questions. We're talking about Jon Lester here , we're talking about a guy with not many peers. All the talk from the experts and fans about the haul of prospects and ML talent the Sox would get in return IF they even traded Lester while I said all along he was as good as gone and they weren't getting what people were claiming they would. ( was that a run on sentence? ) The fact is they traded a front of the rotation starter , proven playoff winner in a major market, another ML player PLUS cash for a 29 yr old .260 hitter. Lester being a rental in Oakland is completely irrelevant , this is about the Sox losing a guy they have had under their control and could have kept if they didn't fuck this up. There is no way in hell anyone can paint this as anything less than Billy Beane kicking the Sox front office from one coast to the other. The Sox were absolutely crushed in this deal. It's impossible to think they could have gotten less. Which leads us to wonder just how bad the other offers were all along. Can you imagine how bad the Pirates offer must have been? Everyone in the game knew the Sox had fucked this whole thing up and they all lined up to remind them. Beane won it but there were many who could have.

Only question, of course, is whether the Aholes can finally win a playoff series. Let's hope not!

The Red Sox messing up contract negations and what they got in return for trading him having no bearing on each other.

That Oakland rotation is NASTY. My only concern is their offense now without Cespedes... is there enough pop? Moss and Donaldson are both solid, but Cespedes was a key piece to their success this year at the plate and with his glove/arm.

Behind the plate?

If the A's lose in the first round again the joke will be on them.

The funniest thing would be if the A's lose the division and follow that up by losing in the play in WC game lmao
