yeaaaah...I'm gonna need you to stop saying ridiculous things...yeeeeaaah.

Give me a legitimate reason they would keep two situational running backs who only play in identical situations. Not a chance they keep two tiny third down-change-of-pace running backs.

didn't read the thread but wanted to give my opinion........Jacobs is big but felt he was never effective in short yardage considering his size? at this point in his career, don't see him adding much to our offense, very situational. now that we drafted a RB high, Jacobs is gone.

Dixon is still in the mix because of ST's, but in the next three rounds we'll likely add a ST's 'coverage' guy. so i think he's gone too.

we'll then add an UDFA and later keep an eye out for a vet RB getting cut. we won't necessarily add another RB, but look for someone better than either Jacobs or Dixon.

Rep that!

You touched on my points in here. Jacobs used to be an effective runner but at this point he's a one trick pony at best. He doesn't have the quickness or explosion anymore to hit the holes in the open field. We are looking to the future and he has none in this league.

I've never said that Dixon would get carries because of his ST play he has a chance to make the team. I think that he also is a longshot to make the team and I honestly see him and Jacobs both hitting the road.

I don't think my point is that hard to understand but Badger seems to have a hard time grasping it.

Yeah Toby let me fix that for you... So Much for Anthony Dixon. Nice kowin' ya.

Of course Dixon is gone but your math is off. They added two backs and you only have them cutting one. Add that to the inexplicable signing of Jenkins and that means they are probably going to keep an extra wide receiver. It all adds up to bye bye for Hunter.

Man I love this pick. James can run inside or outside ala Sproles. He can take the pounding... he sometimes toted the rock 30-40 times per game for Oregon. With Gore in his twilight, running back was a position of serious need and they filled it with a first round talent at the end of the second round. I bet Hunter adds 5-10 lbs and becomes the everydown back-up to Gore. James is the third down back and Jacobs is short yardage. Dixon is the odd-man out.

After hitting up some youtube videos I'm really liking what I've seen from James. Granted they are youtube highlight videos so they obviously show the positives but:

I like that fact he runs like his life depends on it. What I mean is despite his size he's not afraid to take on a defender and he fights for yards and fights to stay up and not get tackled. Doesn't seem like he just hops out of bounds at the first sign of trouble either.

The other thing I like is his vision and instincts. Seems like he has a good feel for where to go, what move to use, and when to do it. Also he appears to have the "feel" or "Spidey Sense" where it seems like he can sense where defenders are despite not seeing them.

That "feel" is why I think there is a chance he could develop into a good return man since great return guys especially Hester have that uncanny knack or "feel" to know where defenders are going and to have an idea of where things are unfolding before they unfold.

I'm going to go ahead and go on the limb to say he's going to be a pretty impactful player on offense this season and I think we'll see in a ton of different packages and formations.

us Duck fans have been lucky enough to watch 4 years of highlights from James. He is a great pick and a guy who refuses to go down. And for some reason defenders cant take him down. You got yourself a GREAT pick and I am glad he stays relatively close so I can still catch home of his games on TV with regional coverage.

I'm kinda with badger with this one. A 29 yr old power back isn't that much of a big deal considering he is just going to be a role player.

Dixon was unimpressive in the few years here as a running back. Dixon is considered a power running back on a team that struggled mightily in short down yardage situations. A good special teams guy? Forget that, give me a power back that can convert first downs. Dancing Dixon has been a disappointment in that department.

As far as lemichael James goes, he is faster than Kendall hunter. On a team that obviously lacked explosiveness on offense, the niners got two burners in the first two rounds.

I think hunter is a good back but the team needed even more speed. Good pick.

What identical situations are that?

The old school way of thinking is to only keep a smallish back for third and long downs. The league is changing. Was a guy like sproles only used for third downs?

Generally speaking, gore=balance of power and good speed. Hunter=quick to the hole between the tackles, maybe on sweeps. James=get him in open space and let him burn.

Three unique skillsets, imo.

sproles is used like a 3rd down back tho. the saints don't have a typical offense.

lol, with gore's injury history, do you think they will go into the season with just one backup? (Jacobs isn't suited as a 20+ carry guy)

Gore hasnt been healthy for a whole season but 1x in his career, James is a stud and runs a 4.4 and has great shake

Sproles caught most of his passes on first down last year. It was pretty even 1st,2nd,3rd downs.

I think what we're seeing is a transition of the niners offense. I think harbaugh went conservative on offense based on existing personnel. He is changing personnel to a more dynamic one..they didn't go downfield because they had no one to go downfield (except on mismatches with Vernon vs an LB or slow rotating safety)

Man I love Gore. Heart and soul of the team, no doubt. But the niners cannot expect him to be the workhorse.

I like the combination of Gore, Hunter, a power back, and a speed guy like James.

Agreed, just like the Saints, with Ingram, Thomas and Sproles

doesn't change the fact sproles was used as a 3rd down back. when he's in there teams know it's a passing down.

Exactly. And since the NFL is becoming a passing league..."third down" packages are being run more on 1st and 2nd down. So a 3rd down back is a bit of a misnomer.

Also, when teams are in catch-up mode..the no huddle was something the niners struggled last year, too. Settling on Akers to bail em out with long field goals, when they had plenty of time to go downfield.

Only a handful of teams have the old school mentality the niners have on offense and I think harbaugh's going to open up the niners offense even more.
