Is James more Ray Rice or more Darren Sproles? That's what I'll be interested in seeing.....

James seems to think he's more Rice (he can be a feature back). The media and fans keep comparing him to Sproles/Best.

because he's short, we too easily think "Sproles", a 3rd down back. but didn't Baalke and Harbaugh feel he runs tough between tackles? i would GUESS closer to Rice than Sproles? not very close to Rice, but closer.

when he was drafted, i was thinking Mike Tolbert with speed? yeah, i didn't have any basis for thinking this, but thats who came to my mind. :-P

Gonna admit I'm too lazy to look up their numbers but I don't think Hunter is anywhere near that stout.

James, not Hunter. again, have no basis for thinking Tolbert, it was just me with "wishful thinking"?

I'm hoping more Rice than Sproles, because he has shown the ability to run between the tackles in college at least. Maybe mini Tolbert-style :)

Kendall Hunter, RB for the San Francisco 49ers at NFL.com

5' 7" 199lbs

LaMichael James
5' 9" 185

Mike Tolbert, RB for the Carolina Panthers at NFL.com

5' 9" 243

So, yeah. Both Hunter and James a little light for that comparison. I know you weren't claiming any basis, just funny to me that it even occured to you. Mahalo

I believe James is closer to Hunter's weight now (more like just under 200 lbs), I didn't realize James is taller than Hunter though. Doesn't necessarily look that way in pads.

i don't think he has the strength to be an everydown back. hunter isn't a big guy but he seems to hold up better after contact. kinda like warrick dunn who wasn't very big.

I'm responding super late here but this is a tremendous pick for the 49ers. Harbs has shown a lot of trickery with both Stanford and the Niners, and having players who can destroy other teams on the edges such as Jenkins and James is going to be fun to watch. Last season we just didn't have enough players with speed on the edges who can exploit opposing defenses.

Granted, James played in the PAC - 12 where defenses weren't the greatest, but James is a playmaker. Solid move by Baalke.

'edges' is a good way to look at it, think they'll start off this way as rookies. Jenkins to be the slot whether short middle or edges, and James on the edges.

should help the offense expand across the field, but with higher percentage plays.

How about comparing James to Chris Johnson of the Titans, with just a touch less speed?

Chris Johnson - 5'11" 191
LaMichael James - 5'9" 195

Both guys can hit homeruns, both guys can run outside but also can run inside.

I'm talking about the good Chris Johnson BTW, not the more recent slumping version. :-)

Hopefully a more apt comparison (with CJ2K, not CJ2sucky).
