My opinion is that he is a talented player, but certainly not a max contact player.
It's tough in the NBA because there are so few players that are really difference makers, meaning they make you THAT much better.

His resume includes often being injured and zero playoff appearances.

With the new CBA salary cap/luxury tax rules, I think teams are better off not offering these 'above average' players max deals and instead they should sign more players at the 8-10M range because IMO team depth going forward will be the biggest advantage to have.

If they didn't do this, all confidence would be lost with the fanbase...from a business side of things, they needed to keep him to at least show the fans they're willing to invest.

This is precisely why I get frustrated when people try to place all the blame on the players during labor negotiations.

Players make a lot of money to play a game, but it is the owners' bad decisions that cause the financial pressure in the first place. Every year, there are dozens of players who get grossly overpaid in the free agent process. Owners cannot complain about not making enough of a profit until they start collectively making better business decisions with these offers. There are about 5-6 players in the league who actually deserve max $.

Kyrie Irving is no max player, but the Cavs have no choice but to give him the offer. If they didn't, someone else would. This is the biggest problem with the NBA economy.

THis is great news. He is doing something that LBJ was afraid of. He is staying in Cleveland. This is great news for the NBA and the Cavs. U would of thought a home town kid would of stayed but Kyrie showing he is class and respect.

I disagree. He is an impact player and a kid with a lot of potential. Like you said he is only 22 years old. Has a lot of time to grow. He is a Great #2 on a championship team. I agree he isn't that #1 player but Cleveland has to over spend to keep their players. Cleveland didn't want the same outcome as LBJ. Hard for a 22 year old to pass up that money.

Kyrie! He will be a superstar in time, if he can stay healthy.

Imo, if you are Cleveland - you keep the superstars that you can. Nobody wants to go there during FA. Only exception to this would be if a player truly thought it could be a title run.

It doesn't do the Cavs any good to keep getting high draft picks, and then lose those players to FA before the team starts evolving. Maybe overpaid, but smart move, imo.

Agreed.

They had to sign him.

Sure, they could have done a sign and trade.

But, unless they were getting back Dame Lillard, Wall or Curry......

It would have been seen as an EPIC failure.

Now that he's on board, the hard part really begins.

Hawes is gone unless they grossly overpay him and Deng is gone period.

I see that they have interest in Ariza, who I love.

But, he was 8-10 mil on a multi-year deal.

That's.......steep. But, that's what they have to do to get guys to sign.

I will say that I'm rather shocked that they see the SG spot as Wiggins long-term position.

That means....So long Waiters.

He was never going to leave as a free agent. You don't hear about good players getting the chance to leave until after 2nd contract is up because the team has the chance to match any deal the first time. LeBron re-upped the first time also.

Yep, he took the Max deal.

First free agent off the board.

I don't see him as a max player. But, what choice did they have after the Lebron saga?

I thought they had a shot at re-uping Hawes.

But, he might be on his way to Portland.

So, they are turning their attention towards Monroe, who is a better long-term prospect.

One thing I see happening sooner, rather than later, is a Waiters trade.

The Cavs see Wiggins as a SG and want to sign Ariza to play the 3.

Waiters will balk at going to the bench and the Cavs don't need anymore toxic players in that locker room.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Thompson too.

He is also due for an extension.

What's up with the Melo banners and police escorts in Chicago?

Free agency is turning into a even BIGGER circus.

Lance Stephenson gets a " this is your life " movie from Indy.

Can't wait to see how Cuban tops those.

Ahh...Ariza. Do you think he wants to play in Cleveland? I think he would do better staying where he is actually. It will be interesting to see how Kyrie and Wiggins mesh...with Kyrie not wanting 2 share the ball n all.
What is the hold up with Love? I would've thought by now we would have some idea of where he'll end up. I couldn't stop laughing at his response to playing in Cleveland.

I think a lot more will have to happen in Miami if they plan to get Melo. No word on what Ray Ray is gonna do and also Haslem. I read they may try 2 offer him a cushy FO gig 2 get him 2 retire and open up more room under the cap...

Im fired up with Melo right now. They are making him feel like he can run Chitown. It was a good welcome for Melo. I just hope the meeting goes well. Pax/fore haven't done a good job bringing in that Top talent through FA.

The Cavs had to extend him. He is very good & is still a young player that has room to grow. Considering the talent around him & the dysfunction that is the Cavs, he has played very well. And lets not pretend like this is "MAX" max money, he will start out about $14 mil a season in the first year of the contract extension. But year 5 will put him at $20+ mil.

Ariza wants to get paid.

I didn't realize that he and Swaggy P were almost 30.
