I can recall teams paying another team to take a expensive QB off their hands, Goff to the Lions being the most recent. Not sure about being cut but think the Eagles suffered like 33 million in dead money to move Wentz. Browns always have the option to pay a team to take Mayfield, maybe offer a second to pay half his contract or a first ( not sure the Browns have one though) to take all of Mayfield contract, or just cut him and eat the dead money.

Multi year deals and we are just going to ignore the Rams got Stafford? Lol

I could actually see the Browns being talked into Lockett with Mayfield. And cutting Amari next year. He's only 3 mil dead cap after June.

Just saying Browns have options like sending draft capital to unload Mayfield or they could just cut Mayfield because it’s a sunk cost. Or they can pay him to stay home, but I doubt that happens because it just leads to questions asked about Mayfield, will he play, what’s the plan for Mayfield and before every game announcers could touch on the subject. Just seems to invite a negative vibe and doesn’t benefit the Browns in any way.

Steelers have went with Pickett and they also have Trubs so no they would not swoop in to pick up Mayfield.
Trubisky has a 1 year deal at $6.285M with an option year. That's back-up QB money to some teams, (Dolphins). It shouldn't stop the Steelers from upgrading to Mayfield. Should they somehow get Mayfield on favourable terms there's nothing to stop them from trading Trubisky, maybe taking a $1-1.5M loss on Trubisky's deal. I think Mayfield at QB1, Trubisky at QB2, with Pickett as a developmental project would also be a reasonable plan. Getting Mayfield on reasonable terms would be the hard part.

They're going to get a trade done. Mark my words.

What kind of bet you wanna lay? I will give up 50k v cash if Baker gets cut.

Trade could happen, because the Browns could sweeten the pot and sweeten the pot until someone bites. We could hold a contest to see who comes closes to guessing what kind of deal happens.

Doesn't matter because he won't be released but it's fun to speculate and the Steelers would snap him up on a vet minimum 1 year deal.
No way Mayfield signs such a contract. He'd be -1200 odds to beat out Trubisky for the starting role, but why take a career wrecking chance for peanuts?

Soooooo...he thinks it's insulting the Browns traded for Watson but he could "wreck his career" by playing for Pitt?

Help me out here.

I guess, but who is signing Baker to a new longterm deal without first seeing him prove he's healthy?
It wouldn't be an extension. It would be purely a cap manipulation exercise to enable a team with limited 2022 cap space to trade for Mayfield.

Normally you see the extreme opinions from the fans of the team in question.

When it comes to Baker...Jesus Christ. Apparently he's a lightning rod for hot takes.

Because he'd also be getting his entire contract from the Browns IF (won't happen) released.

Goodness, you're not very good at this.

And it won't be a 6th or 7th either.....

It'll be a 4th or 5th, maybe a 3rd if a contender panics when they lose their QB to a serious injury and they want to salvage their season.

To those that don't think the Browns won't get anything substantial? Wentz commanded 2 3rd rounders and Mayfield makes much less (especially if the Browns eat some of his contract) and is better.

The denial is just straight stupid.

If they hadn't traded for Wentz.....Washington would have probably traded a 2nd and a 4th for Mayfield.....and taken the whole 18 mill and saved some cash.

No Steelers insult posted, implied, or intended.

Mayfield has a fully guaranteed contract. He gets paid in full if he's cut. Mayfield is in his 5th season so he's not subject to waivers so no team could claim him. Most rookie contracts have offsets written into them to prevent the player "double-dipping" a salary from a 2nd team if they are cut with a guaranteed contract. However to my knowledge no #1 overall pick has ever signed a rookie contract with either offset language or a full 4 year guarantee. The CBA clause that deals with 5th year options is Article 7, Section 7, Paragraph c on page 41 of the CBA .pdf file:

"(c) Automatic Inclusion. The terms and conditions of the Fifth-Year Option
shall, if exercised, be as set forth below. The Fifth-Year Option shall also contain all
permissible non-compensation terms from the player’s year-four contract carried forward
unchanged. The Fifth-Year Option shall be deemed a part of every Rookie Contract of a
player selected in the first round by virtue of this Agreement and may not be separately
attached to such Rookie Contract."

Essentially it's a continuation of current terms. If there was no offset language in Mayfield's rookie contract then there is no offset in his 5th year option. If cut he would be free to sign a FA seal wherever he chose without the Browns being able to recoup money or cap space. There would be no reason for Mayfield to sign a minimum wage contract if he could earn $9-12M with a team of his choosing. Obviously he would be free to do that, but if he did sign a minimum wage contract with the Steelers he would risk losing out on a much better contract in 2023. Either he would be risking injury playing for peanuts or he would look like a bum if Trubisky won the starting role. There's very little upside to him signing such a paltry contract.

If there are offsets in his rookie contract then he couldn't earn enough to justify his not playing. He could earn more in the commentary booth.

No insult to Mayfield, the Browns, the Steelers, or any fans was intended.

There is zero chance the steelers go after Mayfield.
They wouldnt go get their bridge gap QB & then draft their future QB, just to go spend more money on another bridge gap QB.

No chance Mayfield plays for the steelers.

Now the Seahawks on the other hand........ :heh:
Unless they think he's better than their bridge gap QB and could use him to potentially beat their rival with their rival paying his salary?
