Riley and Popovich though proved they can sustain winning teams in the rebuilding process though. Not taking away from Kerr - It's just I haven't seen him do much until he inherited a stacked them that was ready to do some distance before he came. I think almost any coach outside D'antonio could have won
Kerr inherited a team that couldn't get past the 2nd round. His last two years:
2015: Championship
2016: Runner-up where they broke a record many didn't think would be record and were within a ball hair of winning back-to-back titles.
tl;dr - Kerr's a good coach.
