You know it's just math, there's 32 teams and at any given moment in time there are no more than 10 franchise qbs around so obviously there are always a lot of teams on the look for an upgrade. At the same time not every team needs an elite qb to win, and not every team with an elite qb does win, soooo

QBs are like Hollywood actors. There are only so many "leading men". There aren't enough A-List guys that can carry a movie, so there are countless movies that aren't as good as they could have been if they had a real leading actor. You have your Dicaprios, Denzel, Pitt etc. but then you have guys like Ryan Reynolds, who is ok, but is he really a guy you're actively going to see movies in? Ryan Reynolds = Nick Foles.

funny that it keeps coming to the spread qb. The only reasons were talking about that are because of what 3-4 guys , rg3, tebow, mariotta, manziel,..........not the tons of other guys who werent spread qb's and failed

You have a point. College offenses were ALWAYS different than pro-style offenses, with only a few exceptions. In the old days, it was the wishbone attacks, which made it hard to judge QBs, WRs etc. But that doesn't necessarily mean these athletes can't play in other schemes. It just requires good scouting.

I remember Buddy Ryan drafting TE Keith Jackson out of Oklahoma high in the 1980s, and people being stunned because, even though he was an All American, his receiving numbers were mediocre by NFL standards. Jackson proved to be an excellent pass-catching TE, became rookie of the year, six time pro bowler, won a Super Bowl with Green Bay. Same was true more recently with Demaryius Thomas.

You have to actually develop the qb, too. A lot can go wrong in that process.

And you almost do have to have a top 10 qb

Considering the Last QB in KC that was elite was Len Dawson I WOULD SAY PRETTY DAMN HARD

Now I did not include Montana in the conversation I was going on home grown only

And that's not a shot I like the Chiefs

Chiefs have never had a home grown QB that wasn't horrible. Len Dawson was actually from the Browns, IIRC.

Lets discuss.

Think about how many teams are not satisfied with their qb play. How many teams havent been satisfied for a long time.

what at least 1/2 the teams could use an upgrade.......thats probably generously low
Your gonna find out soon enough. He He.

Seriously though, as a Cardinal fan for decades, I have only seen one QB that was worth a shit. Warner. And they picked him up as a backup to Matt Lienart. Most of the time it's a crap shoot.

I guess the answer it... it's extremely hard to find a good franchise QB.

In the NFL the players are all better, faster. The coaching is better and takes the game to the next level. The game is played faster and is just more complex overall.

In college you can be very good just on physical skills alone. In the NFL you need smart, composed QBs who can handle the complexity and make smart decisions at a faster pace. In the NFL physical skills are certainly important but the mental game is the difference between a good QB and a bust.

Learned something new Today he was drafted in the first round by the Steelers in 1957 and then traded to the Browns in 1959 then was released and Signed with the Dallas Texans who became the KC Chiefs with his old College Assistant Coach Hank Stram

So yes the Chiefs have never drafted a Home grown Product but Lenny was pretty good as a Castoff former Number 1 pick from the NFL to the Then AFL to the Hall of Fame

Kudos to Lamar Hunt and Hank Stram for seeing what others did not.

Finding a franchise QB is extremely difficult ... It seem's like so many top draft pick QB's don't pan out... While some of the best are found later in the draft... It's such a mental position, and so many just don't have the mental make-up to be a franchise guy ....

Tim Tebow was practically a saint and flopped too. Mariota will suffer the same fate the other QBs who played the spread in college did in the pros.
Cam Newton hasn't failed

most of these guys struggle reading the different defenses. College passing games are just an extension of 7 on 7 with 4/5 wides playing catch

As a Browns fan, I think the problem is in QB development and finding the right QB for the system. No way that ALL those QBs the Browns had were as awful as they performed. Here in Cleveland, many people consider Bernie Kosar to have been a great QB. Today he would be run out of town quickly. Some of the QBs the Browns have had, I think, could have succeeded on other teams, with the right coaching, and the right system. In other words, I think it is harder for QBs to find the right fit.

Cam Newton hasn't failed
Cam gets away with it because of his athleticism and Carolina doesn't run a pro offense. You take away his athleticism and Newton is near the bottom of the league in completion % and rating. If Carolina got rid of him today you wouldn't see teams falling over themselves for a guy who can't even run a pro system or throw the ball accurately.

Ok but what about Case Keenum the Texans back up QB that started in the last two games of last year?

Keenum is okay for a backup quarterback. Any team that starts him is in trouble.

Did Purdue run a spread when Drew Brees was there?
