I'm shocked. This came out of LF for the D-Backs. They are a very good team already, now with Greinke, wow.

Thank god. I was afraid we would break the bank for him and he would age fast like most pitchers over the age of 32

I think he will age well, but still paying over $30M for a pitcher in his 35, 36, 37 seasons is never good news. The idea is that he would pitch well in "teh window". Well, time to move on. I'm still just shocked. The NL West should be a lot of fun next year.

6 years, $195M.

Even if the Giants exceeded (Dodgers clearly didn't in years or AAV), they would have had to go WAY over to match the money he'd make after taxes.

The good news is that the Dodgers missed out on both Price and Greinke, so their rotation looks a lot more mortal. I would guess that they try hard for Cueto now (isn't he the biggest remaining free agent pitcher left?). I think we add by the Dodgers' subtraction and the D-backs still have a few holes to fill before being named
"clear favorite" in the NL West.

I wonder if Arizona was in play the whole time and he was trying to make it the rivals against each other to see if they would get crazy in the bidding.

Well, from the reports I've seen, it's Zona that went crazy. LAD didn't go over 5 years and was around $150-$160M. Giants too didn't go over 5 years, but they exceeded LA's offer.

I think California's top tax rate of 13.3% (vs Arizona's 4.5%) may have had something to do with this. At the average value of the contract, Grienke saves $2,992,000 per year. That's a lot of samoleans.

And yes, I know the tax rate is based on the city/state where each game is played, so this calculation is grossly simplified.

Bummed he's not a Giant, but glad he's not a Dodger!

Leake, Fister and Parra.

This may turn out to be the best of both worlds:

1) The Dodgers don't get him.

2) We don't have to pay for him.

Definitely a bit of good and bad news with this, that is for sure.

Now Leake becomes target #1 with Cueto being target #2? Even though if the Giants were to get both, Cueto would be #2 and Leake #3,

On a side note, yet again, the Giants reportedly finish second in a FA competition. I know that we usually lose to an obscene offer, but this trend is getting frustrating, nonetheless.

Leake was #2 apparently. Just signed Samardzija to 5/90

Damn!

Bad off season so far.

I DO NOT like this news.

Evens has confirmed it on KNBR.

So are they still targeting Leake? IMHO, THIS signing would/could insult Leake. If Leake goes to to dogs, this will officially be a blow-up off season.

Easy, guy. Remember in Sabean/Evans we trust. Also since they didn't have to shell out $30 mil/yr they can go after Cespedes or someone like that.

Scenario...

We end up with Scrabble and Cespedes and a few minor pieces.

Dogs sign Cueto and Leake.

You call this a net gain?

Our rotation is Bum and 7 question marks and we have (possibly) the best offense in the NL. The dogs have a solid 1-3 with 2 question marks and a middle of the road offense. AND they still have their first rounder AS WELL as at least 2 (maybe 3) sandwich picks.

Bad off season so far. I DID NOT want Samardzija!
