Easy, guy. Remember in Sabean/Evans we trust. Also since they didn't have to shell out $30 mil/yr they can go after Cespedes or someone like that.
Zackly on both counts.

It could be the case that Righetti sees something no one else does. A mechanical improvement. A new pitch. Any of several ideas that we don't know about.

Leake is by no means out of the picture, and this in no way delegates him to a lower choice for us.

And, yes, we still have plenty in budget for at least one more impact player. I would consider Samardzjia and Cespedes a very successful off-season.

Also, Samardj had a bad year last year in a hitters park on a terrible defensive team. He has a decent track record, is now our 2nd best pitcher, and he's in a pitcher's park. If we do nothing else I'm disappointed but let's see what else is coming.

Scenario...

We end up with Scrabble and Cespedes and a few minor pieces.

Dogs sign Cueto and Leake.

You call this a net gain?

Our rotation is Bum and 7 question marks and we have (possibly) the best offense in the NL. The dogs have a solid 1-3 with 2 question marks and a middle of the road offense. AND they still have their first rounder AS WELL as at least 2 (maybe 3) sandwich picks.

Bad off season so far. I DID NOT want Samardzija!

You are way too focused on that draft pick.

Damn!

Bad off season so far.

I DO NOT like this news.

Evens has confirmed it on KNBR.
You just didn't want to have to spell Samardzjia for the next five years.

Signing Samardzjia does not impact our ability or desire to sign either Cueto or Leake. It may even improve our chances.

And I like that we bit the bullet, made a move, and showed that we are playing.

This is my main gripe :heh:

But seriously, not a big fan of this move. Maybe there's some solace in the fact that he doesn't have the same miles in his arm as other 31 year old pitchers, that last year was an outlier and not a sign of things to come. I'll have to get use to this one.

I posted this analysis on the general board...

Since 2012, when he became a starter...

2012 - 3.81/1.219/174.2/180/56 (a good #3)
2013 - 4.34/1.348/213.2/214/78 (a bad #3 or OK #4)
2014 - 2.99/1.065/219.9/202/43 (a legit #1)
2015 - 4.96/1.294/214.0/163/49 (a passable #4)

Based on his track record, he can only be counted on as a 3. 2015 was not the outlier, his history shows that 2014 was his outlier.

All hitters parks except half of 2014. Let's trust our FO.

The great thing is that no one has mentioned I spelled his name wrong here. LOL.

2014 - 3.38/1.145/98.2/97/19

You and filo could be right, Mays, myself and the front office could be wrong. We'll see.

As long as you start with Sam and end with any combination of rdzjizardizja, I won't dock ya!
You could spell it Samaromiawcehapiojcmaiwecmoiajcwoejdzija, and it'd be cool.

Put me in the filo/cal camp on this one. You don't give a guy a contract like that based on one good year and 10 years worth of talk of potential. The dude just has not earned that contract. There are plenty of guys with potential and with good stuff. The ones that get consistent results earn those kinds of contracts. I had a bad feeling about this from the day I jokingly said he'd sign just for the nickname tzill gave him. I hope I'm wrong on this but I think this is going to go down as a bad move.

The main reason the Giants believe in Samardzija could have nothing to do with the right-hander himself. A year ago, Samardjiza pitched in front of the worst defense in MLB, according to advanced statistics compiled by FanGraphs.com. Now he’ll pitch in front of Brandon Crawford, Matt Duffy, Joe Panik, Brandon Belt and the rest of the best statistical defense in the National League, and he’ll throw to Buster Posey. For a pitcher who got grounders 50 percent of the time in his best season, that switch should provide a major boost.

More in the full article : Giants, Jeff Samardzija agree to terms on five-year deal

Hey, the 2016 season is over. You have to accept it. It just went down the crapper. The Giants lost it by failing to get Greinke and then picking up Samardzija.

Now do not question me. I'm right and you're wrong!

I finally sat down and read today's newspaper (I know, I know, how 20th century of me). The SJMerc had an interesting tidbit about the D-backs : This Feb they signed a new TV deal with Fox Sports Arizona worth 1.5 billion $$ over 20 years. If it is fairly evenly spaced, that's about $75M a year in revenue. So far, they haven't even spent half of that amount on Greinke ...

It puts things in perspective.

Edit : also, Greinke's 2016 salary will be MORE than the sum for the entire rest of the team that has a guaranteed contract for 2016.
