190/6 is still more than 31mil/year
I'm stupid and have no idea what this means.

If that's the case and it knocks it down to ~24mil/year, I still don't see the Diamondbacks being able to do much with it. To me it just seems like it merely makes the signing possible at all.It means that $60+ mil will be payed in payments after his contract is over. Something like $6+ mil a season for 10 seasons after his last year of the contract.
For the Dbacks, in the near term, this frees up AAV money to spend on other players.

Yeah, there are rumors that suggest otherwise, but I'll believe it when I see it.That's how I see it. It just seems like AZ signed up to handcuff themselves for the next 6 years, all for one SP.
Source?Considering they had $40+ mil to spend, freeing up $10+ mil via deferred payments, means they have $16+ mil to go out & spend on another SP.
Source?
Source what?
After arb, the dbacks sit at about $57 mil. They were expected to spend about $100 mil in 2016.
If after Greinke's deferred $$$, his aav comes in around $24 mil, that should leave at least $16+ mil left to pursue another SP.
I think some people are forgetting the dbacks new $1.5 bil tv deal kicks in this season.
It's also crazy that the DBacks are at 57 mil as a team, and Greinke alone just signed for half of that. Hahaha, I don't know how often we see that.
My concern (from a Dbacks' perspective) is that this is too much for what they get, compared to what they need.
They have a top 5 offense and top 5 defense. But their staff is pretty rough. They don't have another SP making more than league minimum. What do they expect to get with that? He will obviously help, and bring LA down a notch, but it cost them 1/3 of their payroll.
And that's 1/3 to 1/4 of their payroll for the next 6 years. It just seemed to me that they needed so much more pitching than one arm, even if it's Greinke. He's only out their every 5th day and costs 1/3 of the entire payroll.
Plus, LA has 20 mil freed up from it, so it's not like they won't go out and fill that spot.
It could very well work out, and work big. But everything is riding on Greinke coming in and not only winning all of his outings, but also inspiring the rest of the staff making league minimum to go .500. Every year it doesn't happen is more pressure, and payroll lost in a 6 year commitment.
We'll see
