The question for me is whether the Seahawks could have the same kind of success with another solid journeyman. Brissett, for example, whose QBR last year was just a hair below Geno’s. (Geno had better receivers.) While developing a QB.

I think the Seahawks style of offense could also make Drew Lock look better who has all the talents that Brissett possesses and then some.

I view it as jockeying for position... You should always to do this before the draft to let teams think you're going to do one thing when in fact, you have all intentions to do another... Maybe they want another team or two to jump in front of them to draft a QB so that either Anderson/Carter falls to them for certain... That's the first thing that came to mind when I heard that interview...
Yeah, I think it makes tons of sense for John to overtly help other teams believe they might go QB at 1.5 even if they sign Geno. It could scare up a good offer or 2 to trade down even if only a few spots if the guy they Hawks really want ends up not being there at 5 and another team(s) out there gets spooked that the Hawks will take their QB.
I would think so but it is possible that the Seahawks roll the dice and see what the market is for Geno if he's asking for too much.
That would be a pretty shrewd move, but I agree it's a real possibility. It might boil down to 1) how much of Geno's 2022 success the team believes was him vs the system/team around him and/or 2) what the team perceives to be the market for Geno vs where Geno's camp is with contract demands. Right now I think both sides believe they have strong alternatives if they cannot reach a deal. The Hawks probably feel there are a number of free agent QBs available who could come in and perform well and for potentially a lot less cost than Geno; there is also the possibility of a top QB prospect being there a 1.5 or even someone else they like further down the board, also for much less cash and cap than it would take to sign Geno. On the other hand, Geno has to believe that if it's not the Hawks who will give him an impressive payday then it will be another team, given his strong '22 performance and the annual off-season demand for QBs. If neither side blinks before free agency starts, then we may just see what the market is for Geno. It could work in the Hawks' favor, and it could also backfire.

We are about to see how confident the FO is in the system -- whether they think it was more system than talent that made RW a HOFer for 10 years and resurrected Geno's career.

It's only a shrewd move it he market is lower than what the Seahawks are willing to offer.

Well, that would be what the FO would hope for....but the market might also call their bluff, leaving a pretty big hole in the roster. Again, it will go back to how strongly they are convicted in their ability to get more out of lesser valued QBs like they did with Geno.

Absolutely. There is a risk to letting him test the market. Assuming that they want him back.

Technically it's a 4 year 150 million deal. Practically it's a 3 year 100 million dollar deal.

Cap hits

2023 -7.2 million
2024 -35.7 million
2025 - A little more complicated. If cut before 2025 then 28.million cap hit. Otherwise 47.5 million cap hit.
2026 - 57.2 million. Basically a void year.

So, if he gets cut at the end of the 2023 season, the Saints would need to eat a little under a 23 million cap hit. Doing if before the 2024 season and that splits between 2024 and 2025.

This is a good sign for the Hawks keeping Geno. It means that 3/100 is likely the top end of what he would get and probably a little less.

We also probably would not make it so backheavy.

I don't see how a 45 million dollar signing bonus is high
Carr signing bonus is 28.5 million and Carr is more valuable. Hopefully, this drives Geno # figure way down so the Seahawks can sign him without hamstringing themselves.

I don't know how much more valuable he has. The Saints also had some limitations on the size of the initial signing bonus. The deal has a VERY low cap hit for 2023, basically backup QB numbers.

Carr been a starter his whole career, and Geno has been a journeyman QB for most of his career. So there is a difference in value.

He was a starter who was cut by his team. How often does that EVER happen?

A little bit more than I expected. We'll see what the final numbers are which is what really matters.

Ouch.

Well, at least now you know. Drafting D and expecting to make it on solid all-around play rather than a hero QB.

I doubt he'll be as good as he was last year, but maybe he won't need to be.

Sounds like 52 million guaranteed first year.

From Pete's perspective this makes the most sense. He wants to win now. Taking a lottery ticket on a rookie QB was a pure prayer.

Geno gives them stability for the next couple of years. I fully expect them to draft someone in a later round.

Just shoot me now. What a huge huge mistake. Geno isn't going to play like he did in 2022, he going to play like he did in 2021 and that's not worth what he is getting paid. So God damn depressing on so many levels.

Better get a game-changing defender. Geno will be mediocre among starting QBs.

To be fair, mediocre gets paid about what he's getting. Among the 12 non-rookie-deal QBs expected to start, he's tied for 11th with Cousins at $35M per. Only Goff is lower at $33.5M.
