Uhm.... he is normally a sub 60% in accuracy so just because he was at 69% this year doesn't mean he is a 69% passer. He has had 5 years of Sub 60%, and 2 years of over 65%. Geno has arguably one of the best WR duo's in the NFL to throw to and those two can make sub par QB's look above par.

His career average completion percentage is 62.8%

want to add this also, Geno has 60 turnovers in his career and 64 touchdowns. Take away the 30-14 ( 11 INT 3 fumbles ) season and those numbers don't look good at all. 34 TD and 46 Turnovers. Not like they looked good to begin with anyway.

Geno was not accurate in his 1st 2 seasons. His next 5 seasons combined he 3 fewer than 100 passes. In 2021 he threw for 68% completion.

One more time. Who would prefer be our QB for next season that is an option?

So you like to pick and choose, put it all together don't cherry pick. Tell you what remove every year he didn't throw the ball 100 times at least. Thats fair. What's that then? 2 years Sub 60% and 1 year over 60%

My point is still valid

you do realize that a season where he threw the ball 20 times or less have a very SMALL impact on his over all totals as they go by TOTALS not averaged off each year.

I'd be fine with Geno for next season... at $20M per. I've held that stance all along. Would I be comfortable going with a top 5 QB pick? Assuming we resign Waldron with the offensive talent and focus that we had last offseason? Yes.

I like Levis and Stroud. Not a fan of Young/Richardson. That being said, if Schneider has scouted all those guys and is fine settling with one? So be it. He hit on Rodgers (was assistant personnel director, under the HC), hit on Wilson, wanted to trade for Allen, and scouted Mahomes. I don't work for the NFL and am not a scout...

That said, I understand finance and pricing... Resigning Smith to some 4 year massive contract is the actual high risk/futures move that Seattle not only doesn't NEED to sign up for, but is not going to help the team given the reason we barely made the playoffs was a shit defense. You could argue Geno was the reason we did make the playoffs, but I believe Waldron and a different QB can produce the same results.

HUGE risk or risk? Sure, it's always a risk... but given all the needs I outlined and the available QBs (and likely TWO of those 4 WILL be available at #5 pending trade ups), this is the equivalent risk of buying a blue chip stock vs. a futures contract. One of the top 4 QBs WILL be there at #5... and if Seattle doesn't want them and takes Carter/Anderson (or hopefully Stroud, I'm high on him, have been for a while), the market for Geno is going to dry up dramatically.

Teams that will be looking for a QB next season.

Jets
Dolphins(most likely)
Colts
Texans
Raiders
Commanders
Panthers
Saints
Bucs

So a minimum of 8 teams. Anyone who thinks that Geno is going to be waiting for a dance partner until May is kidding themselves. If Seahawks don't have him resigned by April 1st, he won't be coming back unless we tagged him.
And that's the point... you really think someone is going to sign him for $30M per year let alone $40M or some $100M+ massively guaranteed contract? I don't think the market is there at all for it.

Right now I think Seattle is in a bidding war with themselves. There's no reason to give Geno that kind of money right now. He's a yes man, I get it... Russell was a yes man too at some point. There's a QB available at #5 with a 5 year option, far cheaper, and younger... and IMO you plug him into Waldron's system (priority #1 is resigning that) with Walker, Metcalf, Lockett, the 3 TE set, two solid rookie tackles, and whatever the fuck we draft... there's success likely there.

So you wait and see. This is one of those times where there's no reason to hastily move on this. And if someone wants to give Geno $40M? Well hooray, we just got another 2nd round pick.

So you prefer we take whatever QB is still available at 5. To each their own. You do realize every other team is going to know we are drafting a QB as well if Geno walks, right?

I'm saying that a QB's play when they were a rookie and or 2nd year probably is less indicative of future performance than their play in the past 2 seasons.

Are we though? They might think that Lock can have success with this group of WR and then grab a QB in the 3rd round. Remember Lock looked every bit as good as Geno in the preseason with 3rd and 4th string players most of which didn't even make the team.

The more i look at how last years preseason turned out the more i think they had a plan all ready in the works. Let Geno play this year, Let him walk and resign Lock for 2 years cheap. Use Lock as your bridge QB.

If we're talking about $30-40M... yes, I'd prefer to wait. We'll get a 2nd round pick if he's really looking for that much, and if Schneider is happy with I'd say 2 of the 4 QBs, you roll the dice. Knowing you're getting a 2nd in 2024, you can also make a move to trade up for another QB in the last 1st/early 2nd, which Schneider has proven he can do (Rodgers late 1st, Wilson 3rd). That's the safer pick.

The $30-40M (let's subtract $8M or so for a QB drafted in the 1st in 2023), so $22-32M will be far better spent elsewhere at this point.

Signing Smith to a massive contract now IMO would be a disaster.

No one is saying that we should give him 40 million AAV. Most of us are saying 30 million is the top end number.

I'd argue $20M per year. $30M seems too high. If we didn't have Denver's pick I'd say fine... you're a little more stuck. The fact we have a top 5 overall pick in a QB heavy class... just grab that. And if QBs are all gone 1-4 or Schneider doesn't like someone, take Anderson/Carter and plug/play a different QB on the cheap.

And this is what boils down to. Some fans simply don't care if we have competency at QB for 2023. Take someone off the scrap heap and hope for the best. Like the Saints did. And the Texans.

I guess that will free up my Sundays as I won't need to bother wasting my time on some crappy team with a coach who more likely than not retires.

What? K, so by your logic Geno Smith = competency and none of the QBs that can be available at #5 (one is going to be, if QB goes 1, 2, 3, 4 WOW, that's never happened before) = competency?

You're acting like Geno has a Russell Wilson track record of success. He had one good year... with a pretty damn good offense in terms of weapons and coaching.

I OBVIOUSLY want QB competency for 2023/24, we all do. It's one of the most important position in sports. Does Geno guarantee that like Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, even bitch boy Rodgers? Not at all - he had one fuckin' good season (although I can extend some sympathy given he was stuck with the Jets). So if that means giving Geno some absolutely ridiculous contract that tanks the team (30-40M) do I want that? NO.

Now if Geno is willing to resign for a cheaper amount and we have options open am I open to it? Yes absolutely. And $20M per year (hell I even said $22.5M per year) I'm all for... and if it means we get Anderson/Carter/Wilson then great! Awesome! I think that'd be a great move! If it means forcing our hands to get one of those DL players while resigning Smith to some ridiculous $30M+ guaranteed contract, fuck that noise. Let's go QB, and have some actual money to spend over the next 5 years on other positions, while also getting another 2nd round pick in 2024.

As for the future, Schneider/Waldron are young (Schneider is 60s, but he's not giving up that role for another 8). I've already said on this forum I'd be 100% willing to put Waldron in a head coach position and retain Schneider and can Carroll after another year. Carroll is still a mastermind with defensive backs (not his fault Adams can't stay healthy), but after last year and the way the game is changing, Carroll is running out of time. Jesus the refs couldn't even give the Eagles a break because offense is all that matters now for ratings.

We don't even know what QBs will be available at No. 5. If you think that Will Levis or Anthony Richardson are going to be NFL ready in 2023, then I don't know what to say.

I am making no such claim. I am saying that Geno Smith offers us the best chance to be competitive in 2023. Nothing more, nothing less.

If Allen or Mahomes or Burrow or Rodgers would be available I would want them. But they aren't. Our options are Smith, Lock, Brisset, Carr, Garapolo, Mariota, some other stiff, or a rookie lottery ticket.

If we go with a rookie, I STILL would want us to have Geno. And, more importantly, I want the Seahawks to have flexibility on draft day.

Not going to individually quote each line, but read all your comments here and I'll just say it's a difference of opinion. You're right, we don't know which QB will be available at 5 or who John Schneider likes.

Is Geno the best chance to be competitive (you seem to think so)? That's where I'm going to disagree with you - he might be... but what do we give up in terms of free agency, is he a one shot wonder, ability to resign other players, etc? I don't know...

I still question whether Geno is our best chance to be competitive in 2023... just not willing to go full in on that. If you believe that and still want us to have Geno and are willing to pay $30M+ per year with high guaranteed amounts - hey so be it. I've certainly been wrong before with my opinions on the NFL moves teams should make whether on this forum or somewhere else.

Guess we'll find out who was right and wrong in the coming months (and perfectly happy to admit I'm wrong). Now all said, IF we can get Geno for $20M per and snag Anderson/Carter/Wilson (or move down a bit and snag more picks), I think we can all collectively high five :suds:

Obviously projections are not facts. All we can do is speculate on how provides the best chances of success.

Of the likely available QBs in FA the only one I would say is probably better is Derek Carr. He's also likely to get 40 mill AAV. There is not another QB that is likely to be available that I would is better than Geno.

So now if we are talking draft, that's a lot more speculative. But what if the only QB that the Seahawks think is worthy is likely to be gone by the 3rd pick? Do you support giving up some big picks to move up? Statistically speaking, the odds that all 3 of the top QB prospects succeeding are really low. Even 2 is pretty rare.

Tough proposition hawk... again, I'm willing to be 2 of the 4 will be there.

I don't support giving picks to move up, but I also don't support giving $30-$40M for a one year wonder who is 33 in a couple months.

Is that the guy you want? Who knows. If Carter/Anderson are there and Stroud is too, do you pull the trigger? I dunno. It gets tough. I still find it ridiculous some of you would be willing to spend top 5-10 cap money on a one year wonder when two NFC championship teams spent nearly $5M with a starter and then another one costing $900K. And then the opposition has one of the best QBs in the NFL getting $40M (Mahomes >>>>>>> Smith) and Cincy is paying < $15M for the overall position.

For one year... ONE year, you're going to pay that much? Seems absolutely ridiculous to me. Purdy was obviously an anomaly but the rest of the team carried him, Burrow/Mahomes proved it for far more than one year (both had great WRs, but so did Smith), and Hurts was basically Russell Wilson 2.0 but the defense shit the bed last weekend.

Well, at least it's a lively debate. Helps keep the board interesting while we wait for something to happen.

For the love. How many times do I have to say I DON'T want to pay Geno 40 million? I've repeatedly said 30 AAV is the top value. And for THIS YEAR his cap hit would be in the mid 10s.

And hey, give him a $501M 5 year contract with the cap hit in 2023 at $1M and the remaining 4 years at $125M each, I just want $0 guaranteed.

Cool you do that because it has to be black and white with you, either or, this or that, there is no grey area or other options am i right? LMAO!

I dont care who our QB is for 2023 just as long as we are not spending 20+ million on a 33 year old career backup that has had one year of extremely lucky play. Geno has a great arm, had it in college also but he doesn't even have the best arm on the team. Geno's issue has and will always be he is a gun slinger with turnover problems and he just got away with it this passed year more so based on luck.
