This move is really weird. Essentially, they are letting him go because his K rate has dropped. Do the Rays really have that deep a bullpen?

He cleared waivers but refused assignment, making him a FA.

1.548 WHIP, 5.23 ERA, 6.1 K/9, 4.0 BB/9

He really wasn’t doing anything well. He will likely go unclaimed. He will have to fight to get backto the bigs again at this point.

They just outrighted him today.

I don’t get the wait period for DFAs. Makes no sense.
I used to think that the uniform rule was that a player was on waivers for 5 days and the team could outright the player at the end of those 5 days if no other team claimed him. It doesn't seem to be the case, though, that is for sure.

His numbers are not quite Cotton level but still a bit interesting that the Twins make this move when he has pitched better as the season has gone on (although his last outing was rough) . . .

We'd see a lot less of this (late season dfa's) if the roster expansion wasn't reduced to the extreme of 40 to 28. MLB really needs to reconsider how many roster spots teams can expand to in September. It really needs to be closer to 32 to 34.

The DFA is there so that OTHER teams have time to make offers for the player, for seven days - that is BEFORE he is placed on actual waivers and thus ANY team may get him, independently of waiver claim order. It is for the benefit of the team who "owns" the contract, so that maybe they can get something for the player. The "owning" team may release the player at any time (for example, if no team has shown interest after 4 days).

That doesn’t really address the inconsistency, though. Sometimes guys sit in DFA limbo for a week or so, and sometimes their status is resolved the next day. I understand the reason for the process. I just don’t understand the exact technical timing of it. My ignorant understanding right now is that the “DFA” is more of a signal to the league and the waiver portion can take place within a few days of the “DFA”(??). Maybe they have about 3 days to start the waiver, and the waiver itself lasts 24 hours? So the whole process can last from 24 hours to 4-5 days, depending on when the waiver clock starts?

The team can release him at any point (unconditional release waivers). When a team Designates a player For Assignment (DFA), he is immediately removed from the 40-man roster. Teams do it that way to clear up roster space.

Marco, good to have you back on here. I believe that cal (as are most of us) are a bit perplexed at the timing of how the sequence of transactions goes down. Some guys seem to get dfa'd and immediately outrighted to AAA. Others have to wait 5 days (or 3 days or 2 days, it seems to change regularly) to go through waivers, after being dfa'd, before the outright assignment can happen.
