Locked up the best Free safety in the NFL for a fair deal.

Sorry bitches. He's owns Area 29.

In 2013, teams only attempted 8 passes to the deep middle -- best in the NFL.

That's 8 attempts to Area 29 (the nickname given to the deep middle of the field) out of 524 total passes attempted against the Seahawks in 2013. Thomas' ability to almost completely take away that part of the field is crucial to Pete Carroll's number one stated goal as a defense: Eliminate the explosive play. The results speak for themselves, as the Hawks as a team led the NFL least amount of passes of 20 or more yards surrendered (30) and passes of 40 or more yards surrendered (3).

Yah his ability to take away the middle of the field is pretty hax. 3 time pro bowler, 2 time all pro in 4 years is just ridiculous. If he keeps it up no reason he will not be mentioned with Ed Reed.

I value safety play over corner (always have) and am glad to see the two best safeties at their positions (SS/FS) on Seattle's team. What a disgusting duo. Yah Sherman/Maxwell are great, but safeties elevate the play of your linebackers and corners to such a heavy level. Elite FS play allows your ILB and CBs to play a bit more aggressive and not worry about dropping super deep while elite SS play allows your OLB to shoot gaps more and your corners to jam + play off and maintain zone.

Mike Garafolo ‏@MikeGarafolo 6m

As @RapSheet said, four years, $40 million with $27m+ gtd for Thomas. That's in NEW $ in addition to the $4.725m he's owed this year.

That is what they just tweeted.

I disagree. His new contract should supercede his existing contract. It goes both ways.

Seahawks sign Earl Thomas to four-year extension | Seahawks Blog | Seattle Times

Thomas was due to make $4.625 million in 2014 on the last year of his initial rookie contract, and would have been an unrestricted free agent following the season. Since this is an extension, Thomas will now be under contract through the 2018 season, making a combined $45 million over the next five years.

So yes, he is still making the same amount next year and the extension goes into effect after that season is over.

The best part about this deal is having him all the way through 2018 season. That's right. 2018 folks!!!! By then, he's still probably be one of the best safeties in the league. Rejoice!

He's only 24!!! So ridiculous to think about considering all he's accomplished already.

Remember when talking heads were saying Pete would take Taylor Mays at that second draft spot!! lol!!!

10 Mill a year is a steal for everything he brings to the table.

I remember 9ers fans trying to tell us how Mays was so much better too.

Goes to show how effective Pete Carroll and the front office guys have been in the vision of rebuilding this team from the ground up into a SB caliber team. But many times, you don't see this type of league MVP type of performance from players till past their rookie contracts and into their later 20s, early 30's when they peak.
Just goes to show how good the coaching is with this team (Pete Carroll is not only one of the best HCs of all time, but he's probably the best defensive backs coach in modern football history). These guys find the right guys for the roles of the team and it's not always about rounds 1-3 in the draft, they indoctrinate them into PCs system, and by year 2-3, they are already pro-bowl talent.

So much fun to watch this, and we got Pete for years to come.

Go Hawks!!!

What's crazy to think about is how young Earl is... He's 24 fricking years old and he's been with Seattle for 4 years already... He's already the best safety in football and he hasn't even reached his prime yet... This guy is gonna go down as one if the best safeties to ever play the game when it's all said and done...

The full details on the numbers are out.

Thomas received a 9.5M signing bonus which will be spread out over the next 5 seasons. This means it is true that his base salary doesn't go up this coming season, but he does add another 2m to the cap for his prorated bonus. That prorated hit goes up to 1.9m over the following 4 seasons.

His total cap hit this coming season is 7.37m which includes his old base salary, his new signing bonus, and what was left of his old signing bonus.

His new base salary for the 4 years beginning in 2015 are:
2015 5.5
2016 8
2017 8.5
2018 8.5

Which means there is no back end balloon that is too high to reasonably keep. He can fill out that contract easily without killing us at the end.

His total cap hits over the next 5 seasons:
2014 7.373
2015 7.4
2016 9.9
2017 10.4
2018 10.4

Looks like a great contract to me. Gradual increase to the cap and no surprises at the end.

Couple of different sources put our cap space now at between 12.5 and 12.9m available after the new contract for Thomas. That leaves a lot of room for even a front loaded deal with Sherman. Assuming he gets a really nice signing bonus over the reported 5y deal they are working on he could get a really nice payday and still leave us plenty of room for draft salary and also not have to back load the deal.

» Over the Cap- Seattle Seahawks 2014 Salary Cap and Contracts
Now puts Thomas as 4th highest in cap hit this coming year behind Percy, Okung, and Avril.

Sherman's current 1.476 hit is surely going to change and likely this week.

O’Brien Schofield was also resigned today for an undisclosed 1 year contact and that was the last free agent not dealt with. He is likely coming in around the league minimum so Seattle should still have over 12 million to get other deals done with.
