Wait a minute -- "Cavs bench was pretty thin to start".

They lost their #10 and #11 players -- players who did not play significant minutes in the finals (probably 0 minutes in games 6 & 7) ... players that signed for $10M & 16M / year and will become immediate starters on their new teams ... and their "bench was pretty thin to start" ?

I agree their bench looks thin now ... but they don't have a full roster ... obviously they will need to sign or trade for a couple of spots.

Lol Yeah that makes no sense, what Turnup said. Thin bench, but the guys that never played late in the season signed for big amounts. I guess it wasn't a thin bench :laugh3:

My understanding is....

Cavs have $74 million on the books plus LeBron's cap hold of $30m, and JR's of $9.5m.

So a hold right now of ~$114m and a cap of $94m = 20m over the cap.

The Cavs have JR's bird rights but not LeBron's.

So they could renounce LeBron.... giving them $10m or so in cap room for both LeBron and Wade. Then they can re-sign JR for any amount.

So if LeBron really wanted to take the minimum they could give Wade $10m and keep everyone.

WOW.
I'd actually be ok with it, and with the Bosh situation ...fits...

If that actually happens, please, no one, ever..say James isn't calling the shots.

It would be a terrible move on the Cavs half.

That's a lot of sacrificing for Lebron and Wade, mostly Lebron but Lebron would get a ridiculous contract next year.

Could Wade sign with another team (Denver) then be traded to Cavs?

As wiggy pointed out... there's a rule that you can't trade a player that you just signed.

I think they'd have to wait till ~Dec or so to trade him.

I doubt James would ever consider playing for the minimum.
His legacy perception would plunge.
Warriors might have ganged up, but nobody isn't getting paid every dollar.

Then seems like the only logical way, is Wade for Love, right?

If there actually is a meeting, then it means James wants Wade to come, the way I see it.

It really would then come down to Wade saying yes, and Riley agreeing to it.

Gilbert can't say shit.

Please let this happen ....

I agree but for different reasons.

I don't think it would impact his legacy at all. Wade is a great player with plenty to give.... but LeBron giving up his max contract so that Wade could make $10 mill would not be damaging to LeBron's legacy at all, imo.

But he has been pretty adamant about his responsibility to the players union to demand the max. And a move like that would save Gilbert a lot of luxury tax money... which I can't imagine LeBron being happy about.

Yeah, I don't like the sound of that at all. I really don't think LeBron would go for that... but I guess you never know.

I also think its possible that LeBron is just helping Wade get some leverage for the 3rd year he wants from Miami.

wouldnt surprise me if LEbron helped wade leverage a ton more cash out of miami...if miami pays him 2 years 57 or whatever that would be pretty good for wade...

Couldn't lebron just get him an extra 10-20 mil in like a nike contract?

Yes he could.

That would amount to circumventing the salary cap which is specifically prohibited in the CBA and warrants severe punishment.

Of course... it would be very hard to prove. If there is nothing in writing that links his signing to his extra-curricular earnings... the NBA could never prove it.

Joe Smith is one of the few to get caught circumventing the cap... but those idiots had everything written in contracts and signed.
