Calhoun was never projected to be an all star if I'm not mistaken. My gut tells me he's here in 2022 and I'm ok with that, but I think his ceiling is decent at best, and I'm not sure that's worth hanging onto.

He was our #1-#3 prospect going into 2018 season

Yeah, I agree he wasn't ever projected that high. His ceiling can be higher than others without reaching to all star level.

Will you feel the same way if he hits .275/.330/.475 with 25+ HRs next year?
Have been waiting years for him to come close to those numbers and something always gets in the way. And he is is a one-dimensional player that stands in the way of others on a team that has nothing ahead of it except what its prospects will bring it. Keeping him on the 40 next season means 1 less spot for them

They could be taken to show that he has two more years to prove what he can do.
We’ve been through that route of hanging on to some player for multiple years hoping we see something next year or the following year or the next

For 2024, If I had to guess I would think the OF and DH starters for us would all be guys who aren't on the 26 man roster right now, with the exception of Adolis.

I think we bring in a free agent and then add some combo of Wendzel, Crim, Carter, Huff, and Hauver to make up those positions.

The question is, who is the most likely to force their way into that equation over the next two years? Probably, none of them. If anyone else does it will most likely be Thompson.
But we’ll never know over the next couple of years without giving them the opportunity

I thought you would enjoy this part of today's Prospect Report from Baseball America.

M.J. Melendez, C, Royals: Melendez’s amazing season jumped to another level on Sunday, as he had his sixth multi-home run game of the season with two home runs for Triple-A Omaha. That gives Melendez 41 home runs on the season. With no other active player having more than 34 home runs and just five games left to play, Melendez is virtually assured of being the MiLB home run champ.

But there’s more. Melendez’s 41 home runs are the most by any minor league since Kris Bryant hit 43 in 2014. No minor leaguer has hit more than Bryant’s 43 home runs since Ryan Howard hit 46 home runs in 2004.

Melendez also is the first catcher to reach 40 home runs since Todd Greene hit 40 in 1995.

If Calhoun could field like Peters or Garcia then I definitely would like to be patient and. Or saying he won’t be on 22 roster. Just. It buying in that he is here during our next window which makes him a tad more expendable.

Defense matters and yes he has gotten better but he is not athletic defensively

If who looks to be here in our next window is a measurement then Leody and Peters are probably in the same boat with Calhoun. At least, as starters, that is most likely the case.

We have 49 guys on our 40 man now. How many of those are still there on Opening Day 2024? Probably 12 to 15 at the most, and more likely only 10 to 12. Most of them are pitchers and catchers with very few IF and OF.

and how much would it cost us in prospects to get him? he's their #4 prospect so i'm figuring at least 3 of our top 15

Yes, I remember some guy name Gallo. I hope we don't continue making those kind of mistakes. Fair is fair but there is a limit.

5 seasons I will admit he could hit homers and defensively he was an All-star but he couldn’t hit for average and boy could he strike out

Yes I agree to some extent which is why I am reluctant to add an OF this offseason otherwise we may have a glut in the 40 and like you only Garcia looks like a keeper. Only difference is defense though I would not argue Calhouns hit tool is likely better. But hey Woody was reluctant to hit him against LHP due to HBP. That is a bad omen

A bad omen or a bad manager?

I doubt it has anything to do with HBP at this point.

That is an easy fix. Trades and waiver wires would clear that glut up.

Peters and Taveras have flashed defensive abilities but both still need to show more at the plate so I’m willing to give them more time. And I’d like see what Walker and Thompson can bring. Some seem to want to write them off while clinging to Calhoun

A bit of both. Sandler told me they were being cautious like this was a good thing. I am the one who asked why he wasn’t starting. Maybe Woody reads Twitter and took the hint. The following day he started and he hit a double and a generously scored triple yesterday

Re Calhoun Although talented it is wrong to think he might be a tad fragile
