Matt Winn started off slow at Augusta after his demotion (for Steve Lerud :rolleyes2:) but has caught fire since.

Miguel Gomez, listed as a catcher, has played almost every game since he was placed on the roster as the DH, and a handful of games at 3B. Zero games at catcher. Safe to say they abandoned that experiment.

Both Suarez and Gregorio looked OK in their losses. They gave up runs, but their peripherals were good. Good to see.

Richmond (10-26) lost 6-2

Once again, a close game was booted away by giving up three runs in the 8th inning. While not the winning runs, this has become the trend for Richmond this season.

Myles Schroder 3-4, run, RBI (.264)
Mike Kickham 1-1 (.667) He should try a field position, because he is pitching like crap

Tyler Beede (L, 2-2) 6.0-7-3-3-3-4 (3.65)

Jeff Soptic (L, 0-2) 2.2-3-1-1-0-3 (10.80)

Augusta (16-20) lost 11-10

Having taken lessons from Richmond and given up 2 runs in the top of the 9th, along with 6 runs in the top of the 6th, and blowing an 8-1 lead. Aren't there ANY competent relievers in this system?

Lucius Fox 3-5, run, RBI, double, triple (.240)

Miguel Gomez 2-5, run, 3 RBI, homer (3) (.333)

Fargas scored from second base on a normal sac-fly in this game (no funny bounces or anything). It was electric.

Here is an interesting piece of trivia about Sacramento. They list Travis Higgs as one of two catchers on the 7 day disabled list but he is also listed as the bullpen catcher among the coaching staff. I wonder if he is truly injured or just stashed away in case of an emergency catching situation.

To be fair, although no "funny bounce" there was "general lollygagging jackassery" from the CF who fell asleep after he caught the ball. Kudos to the kid for recognizing the opportunity, but it was a defensive shitshow.

That may be true, but Fargas has serious speed. And a huge arm.

He is struggling with hitting for average at San Jose, and on base stealing. He is just not good at reading pitchers and situations yet.

BTW, I am going to see the Baby G's play the Nuts tonight.

The humiliation professional baseball players have to go through in the minor leagues. What a circus it must feel like to them sometimes.

My friend and I were commenting on some of the team names. My favorite is the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. "Hi, my name is _______, and I play second base for the Iron Pigs." Has a nice ring to it, yes?

I really like minor league ball. In spite of the constant craziness of sausage races and little kids running around and stupid contests.

We were in Stockton last week and it was Jerry Springer Night. I kid you not. He was in town to film some sort of TV show. The contest was two guys dressed in those balloon bubbles, and they were to try and knock each other down. The one standing would be the winner. Best two out of three. Trouble was, when they ran at each other like Sumo wrestlers, they collided and both went down. Even Jerry Springer had to give up on that, because it was time for the Al's Auto Glass (Cue breaking glass sound) hit of the week contest.

I love minor league baseball!

Monday 5-16

Sacramento (15-24) Lost 6-1

Jarrett Parker 3-4 (.257) What?!? No homers?!?!
Grant Green 1-3, RBI, double (.297)

Chris Stratton (L, 4-4) 6.0-8-5-5-3-2 (6.60)
Steven Okert 1.0-1-0-0-0-2 (3.97)
Jake Dunning 1.0-1-0-0-0-1 (7.13)

I am not sure who the pitching coaches are for our minor league teams, but our pitchers are doing terribly this year. Not seeing a lot of positive development yet. A lot of inflated ERA's, and Richmond blowing a dozen leads late in the game does not speak well of the talent nor the coaching.

San Jose (20-15) lost 3-1

Ronnie Jebavy 2-3, run, double (.227)
Steven Duggar 1-3, RBI, double (.280)

Jason Forjet (L, 4-2) 7.0-7-3-2-0-5 (4.41)
Jose Morel 1.0-1-0-0-0-1 (3.86)

Forjet pitched a really nice game, showing a low 90's fastball and some good breaking stuff. His defense screwed him over. Some stolen bases, passed ball, an error accounted for the early 2 runs. In the 8th, Arenado was playing on the line, and the leadoff hitter for Modesto hit it right at him and it went right past him down the line for a triple. The hitting was anemic except for Jebavy and Duggar. Hinojosa and Shaw left men on base in the 8th, effectively killing whatever rally may have developed. To be honest, the Modesto pitcher was throwing hard (92-94) all game, and looked to be overpowering.

Augusta (16-21) lost 3-2 in 12 innings

Matt Winn 2-5, 2 RBI, triple (.315)
Miguel Gomez 1-4 (.328)

Michael Santos 8.0-10-2-2-1-5 (3.02)
Tyler Cyr (L, 2-2) 4.0-5-1-0-1-4 (2.86)

E: Dobson (5, fielding); Fox (12, throw)

I love minor league baseball too! Grew up going to games in, mostly, Modesto and Visalia (got into baseball after the single A affiliate of the Giants left Fresno but before the triple A affiliate moved into town). I'm thinking as a baseball player, some of the names alone are incentive enough to get to the big leagues.

Sacramento (15-24) Lost 6-1

Jarrett Parker 3-4 (.257) What?!? No homers?!?!
Grant Green 1-3, RBI, double (.297)

Chris Stratton (L, 4-4) 6.0-8-5-5-3-2 (6.60)
Steven Okert 1.0-1-0-0-0-2 (3.97)
Jake Dunning 1.0-1-0-0-0-1 (7.13)

I am not sure who the pitching coaches are for our minor league teams, but our pitchers are doing terribly this year. Not seeing a lot of positive development yet. A lot of inflated ERA's, and Richmond blowing a dozen leads late in the game does not speak well of the talent nor the coaching.

San Jose (20-15) lost 3-1

Ronnie Jebavy 2-3, run, double (.227)
Steven Duggar 1-3, RBI, double (.280)

Jason Forjet (L, 4-2) 7.0-7-3-2-0-5 (4.41)
Jose Morel 1.0-1-0-0-0-1 (3.86)

Forjet pitched a really nice game, showing a low 90's fastball and some good breaking stuff. His defense screwed him over. Some stolen bases, passed ball, an error accounted for the early 2 runs. In the 8th, Arenado was playing on the line, and the leadoff hitter for Modesto hit it right at him and it went right past him down the line for a triple. The hitting was anemic except for Jebavy and Duggar. Hinojosa and Shaw left men on base in the 8th, effectively killing whatever rally may have developed. To be honest, the Modesto pitcher was throwing hard (92-94) all game, and looked to be overpowering.

Augusta (16-21) lost 3-2 in 12 innings

Matt Winn 2-5, 2 RBI, triple (.315)
Miguel Gomez 1-4 (.328)

Michael Santos 8.0-10-2-2-1-5 (3.02)
Tyler Cyr (L, 2-2) 4.0-5-1-0-1-4 (2.86)

E: Dobson (5, fielding); Fox (12, throw)
A lot, but not all, of the pitchers who looked good last year, are doing mediocre or worse this year. With that said, Stratton looked bad at double A last year and got promoted to triple A anyway, and looked better! Maybe he can do the same this year - get a promotion to the big leagues and do well (although that trend bodes ill for him, and for the Giants, in 2017).

Two things stick out to me about the scores from today:

1. Tyler Rogers is really starting to stick out in an otherwise thin Richmond bullpen. I would hope he gets the promotion to Sacramento soon as they also seem to have more holes there than I had expected before the season began.

2. Why is Jeff Soptic still around? This is his 4th year in San Jose and he's looking even worse this year. I feel bad for writing this but I do think its time for him to hang it up.
