So why in the world did the Giants bring Slania up from AA (where he was doing well as a starter) for one start in Sacramento and then send him to San Jose!?!?

If the timing is right/when I think it was. With how thin they were in Sacramento (Suarez, Stratton in SF, Heston on DL) and Slania likely matching up same day as they needed. Would be my best guess

Oh, the night that was in Sacramento tonight.

Blackburn was just ugly in the first two innings, two home runs, triple, BB, four runs allowed. Could have been three HR's in the first inning but Federowicz 400 ft bomb went to wrong spot in the yard, only got a single out of it.

Settled down a little after that but still surrendered eight hits, two walks in six innings.

Ishikawa got the strikeout hat trick, Gorkys looked solid, Castillo keeps hitting but the team had no timely hitting to speak of tonight and lost 4-3 as a result

But it seems that he is going to end the season in San Jose. Got to be hard on the ego ultimately ending the year demoted.

Sounds like most of that team is ready for a promotion then!

The Rivercats had a log-jam of starters, and San Jose needed guys in the rotation (been running out a reliever to start). The Giants also didn't want to mess with Slania's rest days, so they just sent him to San Jose, and he will finish out there.

Beede was seriously good yesterday. Was hitting 97+ in the 7th inning. Had 21 swinging strikes, his season high!

He's really figuring things out, while getting his repertoire just right. He was throwing the cutter a lot last year, but this year he's gone to a heavy sinker, and that's seemed to work better for him. He's also back to throwing more 4-seam fastballs after the Giants had him get away from that since they drafted him. He also throwing his hammer curveball again, which he hadn't really thrown a lot since High School.

My understanding (I read it somewhere last year) is that they had him throwing primarily off-speed stuff and tried to develop BOTH the cutter and sinker in an attempt to speed up the comfortability and effectiveness of his secondary pitches. The Giants KNEW he had a plus plus fastball and plus curveball, they just wanted to force his pitch development by not allowing him to use those pitches to get out of jams.

They did a similar thing with Cain many, many years ago. He had killed in low-A the year before, and had enormous success in high-A for the first half : with his fastball/curve. They *really* wanted him to work on his changeup, and his pitch selection (depending on situation) so he wasn't allowed to throw curves. I say him pitch a true gem in San Jose that year about a month before he got promoted. Almost all fastballs, with changeups thrown in at key moments. I still remember that game. Sigh.

Really solid article, great job GPC! Its interesting that you mentioned the connection with Stratton and Blackburn. Both of them seem to be more highly valued by the big league club but Blach seems to have the most success at the AAA level. Hope he gets a shot with the big league club soon and does well.

I guess it might be fairly common, but I really do like from a chemistry/growth perspective, that you have guys go through the levels together.

Blach will get his first shot in September, has earned it.

I do get why there isn't as much hype with him, fastball in high 80s, no real swing and miss stuff, but it's worked for him this year in a hitter-friendly league.

Will make a longer post towards end of the season about additional stuff, things I took away.

One thing is that I dropped the ball with profiles and evaluated schedule poory. July/August have just been filled with road trips for SAC, so limited interview opportunities for profiles, definitely wish I could have done more.

Just because I've watched him so much this year, I do want to end the season with a Gregorio interview and profile.

Yeah and now we are seeing the complete package. He seems to have settled into the 4-seam/sinker/curveball/change repertoire, and maybe he'll break out a cutter or 2-seamer every now and then. The lack of K's were freaking some people out since Beede has turned Pro (as he was a big-time K pitcher in college), but it's for the reasons you stated, the Giants were forcing him to throw new pitches and more to contact. But he's been let loose.
