Sorry LP, you are the only Lions fan close enough for me to fight, I don't want to be left out here. Temple Square, high noon. I will spend tonight watching Jackie Chan movies to prepare.

Problem for you is that, I work very close to downtown. I can actually make that work. Loser buys Lunch and Drinks.

I have not read all this. Care not to be a part any longer. On to football.

Not sure anyone mentioned this ... IMO do not tag. Not at all a option. Offer a sweet deal front loaded with bonus or guarantee money early in contract as Meow mentioned a few months back. The cap hit from a tag would cripple them. Not sure Meow's idea works either. Just know he is on the right track, because it makes way more sense than 25% cap space on one guy.

I am still for cutting loose a bunch of those names mentioned wether he stays or not.

I work in Sandy myself so this can totally happen, I will bring my infant with me and scream "NOT IN FRONT OF THE BABY!" Then when you drop your guard I will cheap shot your kidneys. No way you see that coming.

Richard Seymour...not exactly entering his prime but was 29 when they let him walk, had his career high in sacks that year....and 3 seasons later was an all pro and pro bowl.

I think there is no way in hell they would sign Suh for that much money. Brady and Revis are the only guys on that team making more than 10 million. (Revis on a 1 year deal). He won't break the bank for 1 guy. People keep talking about rather having Suh than three 9 million dollar guys, but the Pats win with a core team of guys making much less than 9 million(and they are all on 3-4-5-7 year deals) I think thats the point. When those deals end, and those guys want raises, those guys will be gone. Suh would be no different.

Seymour didn't walk.

He was traded. For a first round pick. They took Solder with the pick.

The Pats have never gotten rid of a star player in his prime like Suh.

As it's been said before, players like Suh almost never hit FA. It's unheard of. Last time we did this I think Reggie White and Deion Sanders were the best comparable examples, and we all know how long ago that was.

As long as we have Austin we can survive without Suh. I would do what it takes to keep him instead. Even if we have to give him HC money. Get him set up to succeed Caldwell.

I read where Austin has been added to the list of 'black coaches you should hire' the NFL hands out to every team looking for a new HC each off season. I think he's far more than a Rooney Rule pawn, myself.

Houston let Mario Williams walk. Buffalo signed him to a monster contract.

Mario wasn't the dominant force Suh is. If I remember correctly he had injury issues too.

While I agree Mario Williams hasn't been named 1st team all-pro multiple times in his first couple years -- he was named 2nd team all-pro 3 times at a position that is absolutely stacked with elite level players.

He did have an injury in his contract year, but Houston had already made it known before the injury, they weren't re-signing him. Other than that -- he missed 3 games in 8 years. His last 112 games -- he has had 86 sacks and 15 forced fumbles. I'd have to say, while it isn't JJ Watt type of domination, that is an elite talent being let go at 26 years old.

The flip side is -- he signed with Buffalo and has 37 sacks in 46 games. So he has been even more productive after he left Houston, which is something we could have to deal with if Suh leaves.

I still stand by what I said before -- offer him 1 dollar more than McCoy, so he can still be the highest paid DT, but no chance I would pay him JJ Watt money. That is just way too much for a DT, IMO.

Either way were talking a few million give or take. One day sooner than later some D player will get paid more than Suh and JJ. So it's really a moot point.

It's not going to be a matter of the $ offered that determines whether or not he stays, its him wanting to play here or not.

As much as I loathe our front office even they aren't so stupid as to try and work a deal hoping to get a bargain. His new contract that will be reported in the press is going to be larger than Watt's, I have zero doubt about that.

It's all about how the contract is structured. The Lions offer will better than the Watt and McCoy deals because more of it will be guaranteed $. Because our front office are fucking idiots they will have to use a very sizable signing bonus and create a lot of dead $. The Texans and Bucs used roster bonuses for much of the nearer term payments.

Hell, guarantee $60m and give him a $30m signing bonus. Those numbers kill the other contracts. Pay him a shit salary of $1.8m in the first year. His salary is irrelevant because of the signing bonus, he gets $31.8m in his first year.

Or you can choose to use a huge option bonus in the second year with a much smaller signing bonus in the first year, the player still gets a shit ton of $ in the early part of the contract.

From a cap perspective the only relevant thing to discuss is whether the franchise tag is an option if we wanted to try and keep him that way. I promise you that its not. If you want to see why I will show you, and if everyone doesn't agree afterwards I'd be absolutely stunned.

If the Lions don't resign Suh it will be because he flat out doesn't want to play for Detroit. He is playing on a good team, one that hopefully will keep trending up, so saying he wants to play for a contender isn't a valid excuse. If he leaves its because he doesn't like Detroit, so he doesn't like our team.

What will the die hard supporters have to say then?? If he shits on us as a franchise will you still be rooting for him? If he isn't wearing my teams jersey then I wish him nothing but the worst so far as his football career goes.
